Sellers- How do you feel about people watching your items but not buying, making offers, or bidding?

Buyers- why do you watch?

I've been a buyer on ebay for years, but I'm a new seller. All my listings atm except the 3 I uploaded this morning have at least 1 watcher each. I wanna know how sellers feel about watch. Does anyone else get really fed up of people watching their decently priced items but not buying, bidding, or making offers? I do especially when with my fiancé's help, all my items are now at a better price! I always thought the whole point of watch was to keep a eye on something you want to buy, or at least that's why we use it!

I genuinely think it's time that ebay get rid of watch and add a new feature, one that makes it crystal clear to sellers that people do want to buy, bid, or make offers on your items. I find it really unfair that watch doesnt make it clear that people want to actually buy your things. It's embarrassing and frustrating when you notice you have watchers, drop your prices or send offers to tempt them, but nothing happens. I would probably call the new feature something like Want to Buy. And for auctions, i would have ebay ask anyone that clicks Want to Buy, "Are you willing to bid on this item?" and if the potential bidder taps no, they should not be allowed to put the item on Want to Buy. This will remove the frustration sellers feel when they are basically being strung along by watchers who have no intention of ever buying or bidding. Watch is super frustrating for sellers. I don't think any of my sold items have been bought by any watchers i have had. When I only did buy it now, I had the ability to send offers to watchers. So I sent anywhere between £5-£15 discounts on items! None of my watchers accepted my offers

Currently 3 of my auctions have a start bid of 99p. Each one has at least 1 watcher, but none have bid. It's 99p!

Im probably ranting now but seriously, who agrees that watch needs to go and what is the point of watch? All it does is build a seller's hopes up, and that's just plain wrong

They watch items to gauge how much they sell for.

Until ebay introduced "Send Watchers An Offer" watchers might have meant something for the reasons already given and back then if I got any  watchers on an item I regarded it as a good sign.   Because far fewer of my items got any watchers at all, it meant something.

Then ebay introduced "Send an Offer" for sellers.

In general I listed at least 1 item every week since last January and I only remember 1 item (a 19th century tea bowl with a visible crack) that didn't get a few Watchers.  So why the increase??

Because re-sellers soon realised that they could scroll down page after page of Newly Listed items, add them to their Watch List, sit back and wait for offers and probably only bother to look closely at the listing details if a tempting offer arrived.

As ebay has wrecked the search and progressively made non-sponsored listings harder to find, browsing collectors / buyers have given up trying to find anything worth buying on ebay.  That's given the re-sellers a more or less clear field with very little competition to make them buy anything at the asking price.

It's another reason why so many private sellers have deserted ebay.  These days it's really only re-selling businesses that have the time, patience and inclination to winnow out decent, genuine items from the mountains of irrelevant (but sponsored) items that ebay throws into the search results and all over every listing.  (Who would have thought that a search for "19th century tea bowl would have results of about 12,000+ to sift through?)

Only four times, out of all the items I've listed this year, has a buyer paid the (always reasonable) asking price.  When an item doesn't sell, it no longer automatically means that it's over-priced, it just means that there isn't enough profit for the resellers to take an interest, so reducing the price just plays into their hands.

Ebay has stitched-up private sellers with the combination of doing away with the old, easily searchable categories and replacing them with huge new ones, send / make an offer and sponsorship fees.  None of them have speeded-up sales as ebay said they would.  It has reduced sales in collectable and niche areas to the point where private sellers can be held to ransom by resellers for want of any other buyers.

I've sold 4 items this year at the asking price and I'd guess they were the only genuine private buyers who managed to find my items.  To me that shows how few real buyers ebay has these days and why every month we see at least one new thread about "Sales collapse in (add each month as it goes by)".  Things aren't going to improve while most of the "buyers" here are only looking for "bargains" to resell.

And they STILL haven't fixed the Spell Check.

A few years ago (before becoming a seller) i bought a lovely leather jacket for 99p, best buy ever.  It is still going strong, there was not a thing wrong with it which is why i never start listing at such a low price.  Even my stuff which is mostly used clothes never goes below £3.  Below that and it will be easier and cheaper to take to a car boot.

I generally put things on my watch list for one of two reasons:-

1. I have bought them and may want to order the same thing again in the future. Having them on a watch list makes them easy to find.

2. I may want them at some unspecified point in the future, but am not ready to purchase yet.

I feel your pain. What is worse is I have potential buyers contact me asking what my best offer is and I send them my best offer and then I never hear from them again. They ignore the offer and let the timer run out which is now up to 4 days.

I got currently 3 watchers on the item I am selling currently. One was sent an offer. I have heard nothing and the offer is still open. They haven't accepted, or counter offered, or rejected the offer so far. I think my item is reasonable priced and is probably the cheapest going in that category.

But it is what it is. You just got to be patient.

Very niche products. Not many people are interested in locks and keys.

This was never a problem before 2023/2024

I sold lots of them... So that's not really true.

Buyers can't be interested in something that they don't get to see !

...with eBay ghosting everything right, left and center...  🙄

That is so true, although IMO ebay started "ghosting" products in niche areas earlier than 23/24.  According to ebay I made around half my sales here in the first two years of selling '12/13, with sales declining ever since.

First they down-graded niche and slow to sell items in favour of those that sold quickly and regularly in a push to grow the business side.  Then they started "stream-lining" the search results to show what was "most relevant", which soon came to mean those that made ebay the most in fees.  Most recently they have got into restricting visibility of anything that doesn't have Sponsored Item fees.  It's why ebay has become progressively more useless for selling rare, niche or slow to sell items of any sort.

I used to sell several items a month, then one a month, now one item every few months.  In 2022 and '23 I sold 13 items each year, IMO just enough carrot to keep me listing something every week.  This year 4 items as ebay tightens the screws to get me to Sponsor my listings.  The "Search" is now so corrupted and manipulated that I recently stopped wasting my time listing anything.

It's one of the reasons so many private sellers have left ebay, yet my items still sell (at least until this year) on another site.  Even on that site, where my sales have been dire for the last six months, I sold 26 items between January and April, as opposed to 2 sales on ebay, simply because their search isn't manipulated and buyers can find my stuff and buy it easily.

Ebay has for years prioritsed businesses with quick sales over slower sales in niche areas, often sold by private sellers of one-off items.

I think it's ironic that after years of neglect and ghosting of private sellers ebay is in a panic and trying to get them to revitalise their collapsing sales by offering them (nearly) 'Free To Sell' anything.

If only ebay hadn't marginalised all the niche stuff that made ebay what it was a few years ago, in favour of making quick $$, they might not be in the position they are today with collapsing business sales now that so many of the niche product sellers have gone to sites where they are not treated as second class sellers to be used and dumped on a whim.

And the spell- check STILL isn't fixed so yet again, apologies for the typos.

Rolling Paper Person is so obviously not a Business Seller - I think his brand new cigarette paraphernalia has been left to him by his great-grandfather & stored in the garage for the last 70 years. The money made is for his ailing mother's cat.

Can you not just Customise the page and delete the Watchers column?

Or is that something else that's been improved?

I wish there was an option to REMOVE the "watch this item" tab on all of my listings... If there was such an option I would DEFINITELY use it ! - I loathe watchers - They are doing my head in !  😡  😡  😡

Just because you are "closing down" will not give you any leeway with HMRC when they come a-knockin'

Imo you are allowing watchers to live rent free in your head.

Something so trivial does not concern me in the slightest.

I suppose it's not a big concern when you've got loads of money and are just selling for fun...

Not all of us are that lucky... and it is very disappointing when people just watch and give seller's who are urgently wanting a sale and some money false hope. This is very bad taste. 😞

eBay should really give sellers the option to opt out of people being able to watch their items in the way of a box you can tick or untick that says "allow buyers to add your items to their watch list".

I recon If there was no option on eBay  for people to watch items then twice as many items would have probably been sold by now, as people would be forced to buy it there an then, or lose it !... instead of just plonking it on their watch list and then forgetting all about it !  😞
