I got Special Delivery by 1pm, my sent item was lost in the post before it got to the buyer (supposedly) but Royal Mail are saying that the basic compensation is £500 but i thought it was £750......anyone know more about this? Is the basic amount 750 or 500 for Special Delivery by 1pm?

You should point Royal Mail to their own price list, Special Delivery by 1pm has a basic cover of £750 with an option to purchase an increased level of compensation. Go to google and check out Royal Mail prices 2025.

How did you pay for the label? Did you buy it directly from Royal Mail's website, a broker like Parcel2Go or Parcel Hero, at a Post Office counter etc?

The 1 pm Special Delivery Compensation is £750 but will be less if the value of the item is less.
With your Online Claim send the Royal Mail a scan of the Sales Order showing the Item's value.

The standard compensation for Royal Mail Special Delivery used to be £500, albeit that was some time ago now, so it could be that Royal Mail have just forgotten to change the amount in the text of that warning message.

Contact them in the morning and ask why their website says that cover is £750 but they're saying it's £500.

Be prepared for a 20 minute wait.
I do think the website is out of date though. It always says you cannot claim for jewellery, but you can. I think Ebay sales prove a claimable value, where as if you were just sending a family heirloom you likely could not prove the value and there have probably been a lot of scams in the past.
