AS OF 15TH APRIL MY DAYS AS A PRIVATE EBAY SELLER WILL STOP AFTER 19 YEARS.
I AM FED UP OF THE GREED OF EBAY AND I HOPE OTHER EBAY SELLERS DECIDE TO NO LONGER LET THE EBAY CONTROL FREAKS HAVE THIS MUCH CONTROL OVER PRIVATE SELLERS.

My sentiments entirely.
Why should private sellers have to go searching high and low just to find information they should be told about in advance.
But as usual things keep changing on a day to day basis.

But.... what makes you think business sellers who also have private accounts will magically have all this knowledge, and not need to look for it, and keep themselves up to date with changes? At best that's a wild generalisation; it's certainly won't be true for many business sellers, particularly smaller ones.
And your point, which you keep making about sellers relying on sales to top up their benefits is utterly spurious. Why should such sellers not have a duty to familiarise themselves with any changes which may be happening?
and, to answer @theelench , the reason I come on here sporadically (a few posts, then I'll disappear for a time again) is because this thread, although at times it's very good, often just becomes a load of old grumps sitting about and patting themselves on the back because they steadfastly refuse to do the research necessary to keep up with developments on the site. There's a cruder way of describing it, but I'll leave that up to you.
@blacksea213 at least makes a point, and it's one which will apply to a lot of people. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be addressed by eBay, as the contracts are in place. If you steadfastly refuse to use RM or Evri, then you may need to seek another outlet for your sales. Regarding the rest of your comment - the information is there; you obviously know there have been changes, so spend a little time finding out what these changes are. Simply complaining that you don't like changes, when you haven't really tried to understand them, or work with them, is pretty pointless.
Yet again, I'll add that SD has a long way to go. eBay still has a lot of work to do to make it properly fit for purpose. But it's not as bad as some of you guys make out, and it is definitely improving.

Rach at least understands the "u-turn" option.
Elon, would fire all of CS, he's got a point....
Nigel would blame BPF on illegal immigrants.
Kemi would...... She doesn't know yet.
Trump would put tarrifs on buyers.... And Sellers.... And manufacturers
Ed Davy would take everyone bowling to calm us down.
Macron would blame Brexit.
On this basis Eve Williams will be the next PM.

Just re-reading todays posts on this thread there are 3 or 4 queries about problems where the relevant info can't be found in ebays recent "Help" pages !

I’m sure the hot weather must have something to do with all the bickering on here at the moment .
As an unarguable private seller who removed my listings at the beginning of April when simple delivery kicked in for me I’ve been keeping an eye on the conversation here in the hope that the way the system worked in practice would become clearer. As of yet I’m non the wiser and all the recent bickering hasn’t helped.
Something has held me back from listing on eBay’s main competitor site and having just read a current thread on one of the main parenting forums it would seem that the grass is definitely not greener over there. It’s not unreasonable to assume that the posters are private sellers like myself and it is full of complaints about postal carriers being added without notification, scams, poor customer service etc, and believe it or not there was more than one recent poster who stated eBay was better!
Perhaps the time has come for me to dip my toe in the water here again, and see for myself if things really are as bad as they are made out to be.
I’m not too concerned about business sellers because when selling pre-used clothing this has always been done in competition with them. That said I did take it upon myself to look at what type of items one of the more argumentative posters on here was selling and if these were from a private account I’ll eat my sun hat.

I agree that the bickering should ease back.
People who post are entitled to do so and people who disagree should be entitled to say so.
It should be left at that. Not be carried on because the original poster doesn't like the response they get.
This is a discussion thread and it's usefulness is that private sellers can try and help other private sellers.
This behaviour is not really for business sellers who are used to a dog eat dog attitude.
I chose to stop selling purely because SD is not viable for me and as a (ex) private seller I don't agree with paying more for less.

Thank you for the kudos.
Please stop thanking people for kudos. I'm sure I speak for many if I thank you for starting this very necessary thread. But lately it's become clear it's a pet project for you and you probably have personal goals like getting the thread to 10,000 posts. Enough. Please just contribute to it when you have some value to add to it. Which I hope is what most of us aim to do... even if sometimes it comes down to wet lettuce humour! (Which I do enjoy!)
I still haven't had items moved onto SD, as far as I know.
Is SD getting better? My impression, reading this forum is that it is. Even if it's a bit like saying a Covid patient moved out of intensive care back into the main ward is probably getting better.
I've no doubt that for some, who print their own labels, happen to work 2 doors away from a PO, are blessed with good health... what's the fuss? After initial problems, it now works well, doesn't it. You're part of the 80/20 demographic that a smart business targets and the other 20 can be cast aside. Ebay isn't running a social service. At most you may be a little miffed that postage costs on some of your items seem to have increased. Not a big deal, you can save on packaging now, because you can sling your fragile items in nothing more than an old plastic bag, confident ebay will pick up the reimbursement. Allegedly.
I have a printer, so that aspect doesn't worry me. I might not always be able to jump on command and dispatch promptly, though my feedback shows I often do. I can't easily get to a PO, but if RM pickup continues to work as well as it has done for me for years, then fine. Evri is a non-starter for me, parcel shop a long way away. Yet compared to some I read of here, I feel I'm lucky. I'm not in a wheelchair, I don't live in the Highlands, I don't care if ebay borrow my money for a few weeks.
Ebay will only start thinking about the 20% if competition from other sites makes them sit up.
Maybe it's time Rachel starts taxing them properly? In 2018 they paid just 10M in tax. I've not looked into it more recently. Exercise left for the reader!

And a charge to view an item!

"often just becomes a load of old grumps sitting about and patting themselves on the back because they steadfastly refuse to do the research necessary to keep up with developments on the site"
It doesn't seem to have occurred to you that hanging around the forums is one of the best ways to "keep up with developments on the site". You certainly can't rely on ebay to keep you up to date. And yes, I know inaccurate information is sometimes given on the forum, but it usually counteracted with the correct information. At least, correct for that moment, until ebay change it again.
And if someone posts something that I don't agree with, why shouldn't I challenge it? And why shouldn't people indicate if they agree with a post - you give kudos yourself, so evidently you think it's alright for you to do it but not other people. It just so happens that more people agree with posts complaining about SD than the posts you and the ebay apologists make. You seem to be a little bit grumpy about that 😀

Having used ebay for 20 years, I wholeheartedly agree !!
The 'so called' Mentors and the obsessive 'You must have a business account' "pay tax, pay tax"
"It's the law" brigade, ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT.
Ebay is a shop window for anyone wishing to sell either a one off item or several. How the seller does this SHOULD be up to the seller. Retailers have for years used subtle ways to intice prospective buyers to buy their goods. One small way is to price an item down from say, £ 5.00 to £ 4.99 This practice is almost impossible on Ebay now because of the ENFORCED 'buyer protection' ( The buyer was always protected anyway) Adding this so called PROTECTION has raised the price of the sellers item. NOW ebay enforcing the postage method used by their 'Simple delivery' program has removed seller choice and one again, raised the price of the seller's item and complicated the whole selling procedure.
THEREFORE, THE POINT IS THAT EBAY HAS TAKEN CONTROLL OF EVERY ASPECT OF THE SELLER'S ITEM.
" YOU WILL ONLY SELL YOUR ITEM THE WAY WE ( EBAY) SAY YOU WILL SELL IT!!"
Basically, it is a drive by ebay to become a total BUSINESS platform and to control every aspect of the selling of items. EBAY wants to be the retailer and the online sellers are NOW simply the 'manufacturer' of the goods. This is a yet another typical example of Corporate greed and over reach.

I also agree that not all of the alternative options out there are not better than it was here.
We can only hope that at some point common sense will eventually prevail here.
But while I continue to observe things here me and me only will decide if and when I want to start selling elswhere.
13-07-2025 12:13 PM
So very true.
This site was really good and fun for private sellers until the greed mongers took over.
I and I am sure many other private sellers hope that at some point common sense will prevail here which at the moment there really is a definite lack of.

Very well said.
Especially as someone not long ago said this thread which is still definitely useful should be closed but now says sometimes its useful.
A great turnaround until the next change of mind.
