AS OF 15TH APRIL MY DAYS AS A PRIVATE EBAY SELLER WILL STOP AFTER 19 YEARS.
I AM FED UP OF THE GREED OF EBAY AND I HOPE OTHER EBAY SELLERS DECIDE TO NO LONGER LET THE EBAY CONTROL FREAKS HAVE THIS MUCH CONTROL OVER PRIVATE SELLERS.

Very true! Those of use that had odd, unique, vintage items lying around or inherited from others that were simply too good to just throw away, especially when you know there's always somebody out there that might find them interesting, or be looking for them, eBay was the way to do it, but sadly no more, the sellers of much of this stuff have left, and now too it seems the buyers. And if I want cheap Chinese merchandise, I'll look on that other big site beginning with A, certainly not on eBay.
One thing eBay have done, but they seem not to realise it, is they have quite simply lost our TRUST. Once a business loses the trust of its customers, be they buyers or sellers, it's very very difficult to win it back again. The answer is usually a takeover of the business, or a rebranding, before they fold completely.

"im one of the few people here who have had no trouble with SD......I suggest people experiment"
Whilst you personally may not have had problems, I've seen enough of the problems that other people have had to confirm my original opinion that I can do without the hassle of experimenting with SD, and I can also do without risking the stress of it going wrong.

'They will find themselves just a distributor of cheap chinese made merchandise, which they already have a solid start on, instead of a marketplace for ordinary people to sell items they no longer want which ebay was created for'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It'll be a bit silly if ebay end up concentrating on the cheap tat; there's loads of competition already selling that stuff : and cheaper!
Whereas the 2nd hand , difficult-to-find stuff really has no competition anywhere near their size.
Fighting for a smaller piece of a shared pie seems daft, compared to having the lions share of a slightly smaller pie...... IYSWIM!

It would be interesting to know what eBay actually think about the backlash of Simple Delivery, in the past they have done many changes which people have been annoyed with, but people have got on with it, or found a work around of the change, but Simple Delivery is different (in my opinion).... It's stopped me selling, and I think it has stopped many others selling, and I don't think people are going to come round with this one.... So I'd be curious to know how many sellers they have actually lost with it, and what difference(,if any) it has made
23-06-2025 3:50 PM
Yeah, I completely agree, I won't even risk using SD, after reading loads of other people's problems dealing with it, there i no way I'm going to risk putting myself through all that unnecessary stress
Also, isn't it funny, how eBay said "THE POST OFFICE WILL TAKE EVERY PARCEL/PACKET NO MATTER WHAT"
But I am reading loads of posts/comments about people taking their Simple Delivery item to the post office, and the post office is saying it's not the correct price paid ..... I've seen some people have had to pay extra at the Post Office to get it sent, and others not being allowed to pay the extra to get it sent...... But it's ok, because eBay said post offices will accept everything, even if it's the wrong price/weight/size..... Oh dear eBay....!!

"It would be interesting to know what eBay actually think about the backlash of Simple Delivery,"
The powers-that-be in the States might be a bit surprised that the Brits aren't as docile as they thought we would be in going along with it, but I doubt if they'll lose a second of sleep over it. In due course the current CEO will leave, presumably with a fat pay-off, and another CEO will come in to impose their own vision of what ebay should be. It's just a matter of When.

Is anyone else getting private messages from W79805
23-06-2025 3:59 PM
We'll just have to wait for the next quarterly report in July (?) and the CEO's statement to investors/press.
It might well be a case of looking at what's NOT said rather than what is and reading between a few lines to try to work out what it all really means.

As a seller that started during the pandemic, I've rolled with the changes as you suggest, and found a few workarounds along the way. This years changes have been truly testing, but SD is the straw for me. I do this as a hobby, a happy place to sell old model kits. I just figure if we put up with SD, then what next.. Evri only or some other extra cost that can't be covered. Not being able to properly track what the appearing payment amounts are for is bad enough.. or trying to list things at a proper price and not like I've had a stroke.. but now not being able to properly control postage is the limit.. for me anyway. I'll sell the other kits I have in stock and leave. For those who stay and make this work.. I salute you!

My issue is simple delivery. Many of my items are small & under £10, but eBay estimated them to be larger than a second class large letter size, making me post them through simple delivery, as larger and costing me more!!
Absolutely right! Exactly the reason I am no longer willing to list on eBay the very many low value items that I can post for £2 with Royal Mail that eBay insist I send tracked at £2.70. It's simply not worth it and totally unnecessary as a free proof of posting will give cover in case of loss.

0.9615 is roughly the reciprocal of 1.04. That is if you add 4% to something you need to then subtract 3.85%, not 4%, to get back where you started. This could save you 15p when you sell an item for £100, something eBay may have overlooked.

Judging by the influx of threads today - it seems safe to say that the move over to Simple Delivery is now complete...

My listings are still showing custom postage, but I haven’t sold anything for a week so whether it will change if I get a sale I don’t know. I listed an item yesterday which would go as a large letter £1.55 but there was no option for custom postage so I had to use SD.

Hi rugbyguy1960 …. 7000+ replies and still going strong. The response to your initial posting is still being supported in more ways than one.
The pen is mightier than the sword.

I've still got a few listed with custom delivery. Maybe they'll be switched to SD if they ever sell, but if that happens, I'll cancel the sale.

@sml192
"Although eBay have advertised it as a flat fee of up to 75p they are actually currently charging 72p."
That doesn't match my own observations.
"It should also be noted that that equation won't always give a precise result due to the 2 lots of roundings being applied (once on the net amount and then again on the VAT element), so it will often be a penny or two out. Plus it only applies for items up to £300 as items above that amount are charged differently. "
Anyone listing something over £300 on the current ebay, IMHO, has more mental problems than just arithmetic.
@punzel9072
"I and many others DO know the BPF is 4% + 75p, and the calculation isn't difficult, but my suggestion was even simpler by suggesting people enter the seller price, click out of the box, and above it appears the precise eBay buyer protection racket as it will be applied. No calculator required."
Simpler if you're just listing one item. However the first thing I did when BPF came in was do a bulk edit of 200+ items, which was a lot quicker than doing them individually. My prices, for the most part, now show nice round or .99 style prices, as most people expect.
@honeymonster007
"Didn't realise it only applied for items up to £300, how does it work for items £300+?"
It doesn't matter. For items of such value you just include in the listing "I welcome scammers" and wait for the inevitable INAD return of a Playstation with the components swapped out, or a piece of wood with nails in it.
@grapecr-30
" I don't think I have ever bought anything new on eBay, and the same goes for most people I know, the unique thing about eBay was you could find out of print books or now deleted CDs, Records, DVDs ect ect....that is what people came here to find, you'd have a nostalgic moment and remember something from your past, and then put a search on eBay to find it, and in general,you could....I really think that was the heart of eBay, which sadly is being destroyed...."
Yes, very true. But thanks to search engines and the growth of alternative sites, more and more of those nostalgic gems will become discoverable on other sites. So don't cry too many tears, just wait and see.
and
"But I am reading loads of posts/comments about people taking their Simple Delivery item to the post office, and the post office is saying it's not the correct price paid ..... I've seen some people have had to pay extra at the Post Office to get it sent, and others not being allowed to pay the extra to get it sent...... But it's ok, because eBay said post offices will accept everything, even if it's the wrong price/weight/size..... Oh dear eBay....!!"
Which was happening back in April and is still happening. No worries, just ask for advice about it in the Wednesday chat.

Yes, I got a sale this weekend, still not on SD. Your plan is also mine. And then I'll bulk edit everything to local collect only. That way I'll still have the listings ready to roll if ebay have a change of heart! Oh... now I'm writing fan-fiction! 🙂

Just spent 1hr 30m with ebay trying to recover an automated charge for a SD label .. which wasn't need as I was sending the item along with another non-SD sale to the same buyer. I registered my displeasure and pointed out that I didn't think automated P&P was a good thing as there are too many variables and its taking away our choice of how to post .. which really shouldn't be anything to do with ebay.

See today that "they" are shifting all my listings over to "stupid delivery"...the fact that i've only sold 2 items this month & nothing for a fortnight i'm yet to find out how this nonsense will affect my posting & packaging of any sale items.
If I can't write out my own label & take it down to the machine in my local post office then my ebay sales will be put on permanent hold.
I don't have a smartphone & am not wasting my printer ink to take part in ebay's little power trip.

Ebay are right, the issue is with the Post office systems, I took the package and it was well over the normal healthy size. The post lady said the system is not asking for any additional payment. Its okay it’ll push through.
so the delivery was successful.
