Yesterday, I sold an item for collection in person and took cash payment. I now want to mark it as payment received but it's not working.
I know how I am supposed to this. I selected the relevant item under "Manage orders awaiting payment", clicked on "More" -> "Mark as payment received", got a pop-up that said "Mark as payment received?" I clicked Continue (the only other option being "Cancelled"), it then came up with a message saying "[Red circle with exclamation mark] Your order has been marked as payment received."
The red icon clearly implies something went wrong but the message said it had worked. It hasn't. The order is still listed as awaiting payment.
What can I do about this?

You can't do anything as the systems only work if people don't break the no cash policy.

😲. I want to know how you and the buyer managed to exchange contact details so the buyer knew *where* to collect from??
Because Cash-on-Collect has been verboten for many months now. Contact details only being exchanged *after* the buyer pays online through the bay system......usually!
(No wonder the ebay computer is a bit confused....🤖😵)

eBay have banned cash on collection. You're supposed to accept online payment through ebay and then buyer gives you a QR code to confirm collection. See "Proof of collection" on here:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/posting-items/setting-postage-options/local-collection?id=4181
You could contact ebay and ask if they can help. You can use callback on here:

I don't sell things often and when I do I don't typically take cash so I didn't know there was a no cash policy.
If I can't do anything about it, stuff eBay because it's too late.
Thank you for that useful answer though.

I hadn't realised there was a no cash policy. No wonder I don't sell often on eBay.
eBay does attempt to block sending addresses but it's nowhere near as clever as I am so I immediately sidestepped that restriction once I realised it wouldn't let me do it openly.
What is the point of having functionality to allow you to manually mark a transaction as paid if all payments are required to go through eBay's automated payment system?

Thank you. That is helpful but it's done and dusted now so I don't see there's any real benefit to contacting eBay when they probably won't help.

It's probably a 'left-over' from the more logical and easy-to-use system that ebay have now 'improved" to be 'Simple and Easy and Better for Users '*

"eBay does attempt to block sending addresses but it's nowhere near as clever as I am so I immediately sidestepped that restriction once I realised it wouldn't let me do it openly."
So you are "clever" because you found a way of breaking eBay rules - really not a thing to brag about on eBay boards.
but it fits in with, as you say in another post here "stuff eBay".

Did you scan the QR code which would have been sent to the buyer , only then will the payment be released .

moot points as the byer would not have a QR code and there was no payment to release.
