Used to sell on ebay but no more as refuse to give ebay my details.
ebay is not my employer but just a selling platform, HMRC are not my employer but deal with my yearly earnings where i pay no tax what so ever after calculating my way.
so now i cut off my nose as i dont sell on fleabay anymore unless collected and cash.
Not always sold on fleabay and feedback is mostly purchases but 24 years down the drain as i fear i no longer want to be a part of ebay, i even set up another account to purchase.
So, i am putting to test small funds to see how long they hold this for, they have £12 and on hold, as far as i am concerned they can stick it where the sun dont shine as i have no issues in loosing this but just curious on how long they will actually hold, steal my money. Its Blackmail from ebay.
i have not looked to any contract but guess they have dropped it in there somewhere.
So even when you look after your yearly tax return and never paid tax as never earn enough, these clowns still ask for NI no..Blackmail..
Hopefully some big concern, collective will fight them in court over this, but we have no chance.
i now purchase a lot more from amazon ..

"ebay is not my employer but just a selling platform, HMRC are not my employer but deal with my yearly earnings where i pay no tax what so ever after calculating my way."
Interesting, perhaps everyone should calculate their own tax liability.
HMRC determine a person's tax liability after a self assessment is completed if you are trading and receive income (not profit) over £1000. As you intimated in a later thread you were trading - "..... long hours for a few qid here and there..HMRC owe me.. i have always calculated my incoming and provides little income" If your statement is correct then it would probably have been in your interest to register and submit a self assessment; you would be able to claim your expenses back thus improving your income (or reducing your losses).
You were producing vinyl decals and with eBay sales of just short of 8,000 and with healthy sales over the last six months if eBay were to report you as non-compliant with providing the information requested this could raise a red flag with HMRC. It may be in your interest to register for self assessment for the 24/25 tax year whilst there is still time.

"and your funds are released"
Or not as that particular poster's case.

I've just got this off HMRC
Example for selling unwanted items.
You're clearing out your attic and decide to sell your unwanted items using online marketplaces. None of the items you sell are worth more than £6,000. It's unlikely that you'll need to tell us about this income or pay any tax no matter how many items you sell.
I have checked mine.

That’s true.
but it’s still legally required for eBay to supply your NINO to HMRC.
because….people sometimes lie

You telling HMRC about your tax is under a different legal regime than eBay telling them about your sales.

I'm on the same boat, hmrc told me not to give my national insurance number to anyone.
They blocked £40 but they can keep them, I don't care.
I sold close to 3,000 worth of used electronics last year, and only God knows how much I spent.
I cancelled all my listings, no more selling nor purchasing on eBay for me.
30-07-2025 9:13 PM
That's extraordinary given that HMRC themselves require Ebay to provide your National Insurance number with the sales data report.
How can Ebay do that if you don't give it to them?
30-07-2025 9:27 PM
Why?
I (for example) am not employed by ebay. Even if I won't hit the threshold (but I will as sold my expensive sofa set), why should I provide it?

@rinofs *may* have been referring back to what HMRC used to say, years and years ago, about telling your NI to people who weren't your employer?
I know I (and many other, erm... 'over 50's'!) took our financial potty-training to heart when we were very young, and feel distinctly uncomfortable giving out certain info, even now the world is a completely different place!
30-07-2025 9:30 PM
I called them up twice about a month ago, and in both instances they told me I don't need to share that piece of information with eBay.
That's probably due to miscommunication, but I'm only doing what they told me to.
30-07-2025 9:41 PM
I honestly can't be bothered. Don't provide it - I honestly couldn't care.

Isn't it amazing the lengths people will go to, to cut off their own nose, to spite their face!
Why is it that so many cannot work out, that this is not Ebay telling them, it is the Government?
Is it ignorance, or just plain old stupidity?
And it astounds me that they will do this and blame Ebay, then go elsewhere until they realise that it's exactly the same there as well.....

You can't and your not even the person who started the thread.

Hi everyone,
This discussion will remain open. Please stay on topic.
Thank you!

If you’re concerned about safety of the info let’s say
i wonder what would happen if eBay “lost” it
would the govt give out all new numbers?
id think eBay have v strong security like govt vetted type

EBay would be no more or less likely to be subject to a data hack than anyone else though. And that includes HMRC!

I know
as my hubby says it’s not a problem until it is a problem so no point worrying about it long as you’re happy you’re doing the right thing for you
otherwise you’d be worrying about everything that could go wrong all day every day in everything you do
I had the eBay request other day cos I passed 30 sales , thought about it for a bit after reading a lot of these posts but thought what’s the point , just give it if you want to carry on selling
que sera etc
