Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

OK so listing some items tonight

good news first - even though Simple Delivery is now being pushed I can opt out to custom settings and select my standard shipping rates

bad news - I have to opt out of Simple Delivery every time I list even though I am listing similar items. Really?

This is from ebay itself:  You can opt out of Simple Delivery when you're creating your listing by selecting Custom Postage from the delivery options. If you'd prefer not to use Simple Delivery at all in the future, you'll need to opt out each time this programme is recommended when you're creating listings.

I mean what does that last sentence mean anyway?

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I agree with some points shopping ferret makes in their post but this one is rubbish as a response to simple delivery post criticism

I imagine many people feel the same way, as do I.

But I also understand sometimes Ebay have no choice as they are a multi national operating company and as such are subject to the various regulations from the US, UK, Europe etc.

There’s no regulation enforcing companies to enforce managed shipping

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Yes, that may be so but they are enforcing SD in order to deal with the other issues there around the buyer seller experience and how it involves Ebay's resources as well as their reputation and we don't know about what other reasons there are going on behind the scenes.  They are aiming to make Ebay shopping a more streamlined service and of course it will not suit a lot of private sellers - especially those who are trading!

It is still in its infancy so Ebay will be working out some of the nuances.  I am sure there will be announcements soon.  Once again, whilst I don't want SD, I do see the reasoning behind it.

I remember when we first got cable TV here.  I used to be on the phone almost daily to Nynex, complaining about the constant issues!

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I don’t think stopping people sending a large parcel is a nuance thing

it needs to get fixed like  yesterday cos it’s stupid

why did they do this in the first place ie remove custom for things  that can only OBVIOUSLY go custom

it’s pathetic frankly

then again maybe I should go ahead and list my sofa with 1kg large letter delivery because it is a fact that is exactly what eBay recommends and then ebay  say if you chose our recommended service even if your item is larger we will pay for it  as long as it’s within the carriers max

ok so my sofa can go as a medium parcel

still not good enough 🤣

so I gather what you’re actually saying is suck it up it might be ok on the night  but eBay have more important things to do

wonderful

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Have you got more than one private account, because you have no listings showing and have barely had any sales and no feedback in 12 months or more?   Or are you contemplating selling some stuff?  I am also selling a couple of sofas, but they are collect only.  Most people selling such large items (that are their own unwanted stuff), only offer collection.  Or did you use sofa as an example of an oversized item to illustrate your point?

Not being nosey as such, just curious about posting a sofa!

Sorry the proof I forgot to post that eBay recommends you send your sofa in a large letter

I wouldn’t call that a nuance

I’d call it absolutely negligent

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

What a load of corporate *bleep* you just regurgitated trying to justify a *bleep* implementation- if you’re not a private seller trying to offload some unwanted items instead of throwing them in the bin then you obviously don’t understand

For example - I have just listed a ticket from a match I went to (as all my tickets are) that weighs about half an ounce and yet the minimum post and packing I can use is a large envelope that will cost either myself or the buyer £2.70 when a small envelope will easily suffice - where’s the intelligence behind that

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I don’t have a sofa to sell

ive used it as an example

I spend my time which I have a lot of time to time trying to figure out what’s right and wrong here and help people where I can

my ID is an old buying ID

my seller ID is different

I got stalked so didn’t post with that one anymore

not that it’s any of your business

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Shopping ferret is a business seller so SD and it’s utter failings don’t apply to them

I do agree with a few point they make but I very much dislike the way they try to gloss over bad problems as nuances and things that don’t really matter  and will be fixed “eventually”

err yes it MATTERS if an online selling site actually doesn’t allow you to flipping sell lolol

whats a corporate shill btw

do they get paid for promoting eBay ?

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Why then was it sold as an improvement for sellers.  It is simply an obfuscation for an excuse to charge more to the detriment of almost every genuine private seller.  An honest uplift to selling fees may not have been welcome, but would have caused far less resentment and possibly fewer promised defections to other platforms.

No need to be so offended. I was just trying to understand your comment! People here will sometimes check out a seller's item to make sense of something.

When we use public forums or social media, then this happens to us all. I'm not interested in stal king anyone! Just the occasional 'background check'!

Because it's advertising, marketing and spin.  (i.e. bullsh**)

The pinacle of advertising is to get as close as you can to outright lying, without getting sued, whilst *seemingly* making it sound as though your product  will still have some positives for your customer.....

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I've made reference for comparison a few times to being primarily a business seller, but recently started selling from my private account as I'm selling off a few of my own items. So I'm a genuine private seller and am also affected by SD which I've stated I hate as much as anyone else.

However, I get why Ebay have introduced it. I also know I've no choice other than go back to selling personal stuff from my biz account and getting charged seller fees, but picking my own postage.

Since the buyer pays postage on the private account, I'll grin and bear SD.

I don't have the issue where I'm selling letter sized item privately, or multiple purchases I want to post together. So for me, other than the irritation of having no choice, its not a problem

I'm  merely stating that in the near future I'm sure Ebay will get around some of the issues SD is posing, eg combining postage. Not sure about the large letter sized sales, though. From being a biz seller, if a buyer claims INAD and Ebay automatically approve return (now THIS annoys me!!) they generate a seller funder return label which only accommodates a parcel size, so we'd get no option for LL returns. However, the postage charge is discounted.

Anyway, I only came here when I was bo longer able to use my own postage on the private account. No need to remain as have it confirmed sadly Ebay has removed the choice for us.

3 options:

Leave Ebay

Adapt to the new rules

Change to being a business seller if that's what you actually are.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Guys, let's not waste time wondering why ebay is doing this.

There is no hope because ebay has obviously given up on itself.

Like I said, ebay has been consistently rolling out changes without properly designing or testing them. I spent almost one hour on phone with ebay customer service, and even they themselves did not know how this Simple Delivery thing works, and they were very sure it could be overriden but just could not figure out or tell me how. They even referred me to ebay's own obviously old and self contradicting help documents, and in the process, managed to click through a couple of dead links on ebay website.

Why ebay is doing this? My theory is to get a cut from the delivery fees. End of story.

Absolutely ridiculous!  Anyone any ideas how to ditch this nonsense?

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I did a 'test listing' for a filing cabinet.

Ebay decided it could be sent with RM (I have deselected Evri) as a medium parcel, which is ridiculous and, you are absolutely right, there is no option to choose custom postage.

People are also complaining (rightfully so) that they can't opt out for items under £10 and under  100g even if they are on the list of items that don't need to be sent using SD.

I am sure there would be fewer complaints about SD if the system was working properly.

Currently, it 'simply' isn't working and has not 'delivered'.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I’ve got a list of items showing that they still need posting. These are sales where SD decided the postage was 4 times the actual cost so I sent them via my usual Royal Mail service and didn’t buy SD labels.
Because eBay is demanding SD, I’m now stuck with these to send notifications and no way of marking them as despatched. that said, I’d rather have a list like that than be paying scambay for SD.

It’s just a total cluster on eBay’s side.

"They even referred me to ebay's own obviously old and self contradicting help documents, and in the process, managed to click through a couple of dead links on ebay website."

I've found dead links too.  There's absolutely NO excuse for dead links.  It means the site hasn't been properly tested.

I've also sometimes followed links from a Google search and discovered pages that are no longer valid because they pre-date Simple Delivery.  There's no excuse for that either, the pages should have been removed.

It makes me wonder if as well as squeezing every last drop of money from sellers, they're also cutting down on technical staff to make a few extra bucks.  Or maybe the technical staff have deserted due to the impossibility of ever getting Simple Delivery to work correctly within the existing infrastructure.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

If you didn't use the SD labels, your buyers will automatically get the postage refunded to them. Unless you offered freepost? In which case, you can apply for a refund for the unused labels within 14 days.
