Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

Three weeks ago I sold a box of 42 magazines to a buyer in the States. The GSP charge for the buyer (Sales tax, transaction fees, postage label) was £43.23. The buyer wanted 4 more magazines, which would obviously be less bulky to send, and I set up a new listing for just those 4. However their Checkout amount show just the shipping coming to $115.84. Anyone have any idea why the cost of sending to the same person is that much higher?

Re: Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

Some of my lots are showing over $42 when earlier this week they were only $22. Just had a buyer tell me when he tried to pay shipping rose to $120. So it is not yet fixed it would seem.

Not fixed. Items that are supposed to be around $20 shipping from the UK were around $40 earlier today. Now I am seeing those same listing at around $50 shipping.

This is not fixed. Please continue looking at this issue as the prices are still triple the costs they were a week ago on the items I'm viewing. If you continue to claim that the shipping prices are accurate it will be in bad faith and will hurt buyers and sellers alike. As is I will not be purchasing anything as the costs are ridiculous.

Re: Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

I understand the price is still higher than usual. However, that wouldn't be related to the technical issue, the prices are correct and after checking, these prices are due to tariffs, unfortunately.

I hope this helps,

Marco

Thanks for confirming this.

Now I suspect the poor GSP folks in Lichfield will soon be having a lot more time on their hands?

What new tariffs have suddenly been implemented?

Can somebody with a GSP listing that's suddenly increased by top dollar link me to it please?

Re: Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

If it's not a glitch, why do the Increased shipping rates keep changing. Yesterday I saw shipping rates from the UK to the US that were previously $20, go from &120 down to $40, and later in the day up to $50.

Plus I wasn't aware of US tariffs on UK imports.

I call BS on the tariffs theory.

Re: Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

There are no new tariffs that have been implemented this week UK to USA.

$42 for a small parcel weighing 150g and goods costing £5 is farcical.

It seems very coincidental that on a week when we are being pushed to use global shipping to get paid faster that shipping costs are hit by undocumented "tariffs"

This makes the global shipping service to the US unusable.

Considering the timing of these issues I wouldn't be remotely surprised if they are related to the recent app update.

The one where they basically stopped loads of their userbase using the app and didn't give any prior notification for it. Almost sounds like it was an unexpected consequence.

If they knew it would happen and still thought it was best not to warn people in advance then they are idiots.

Re: Global Shipping Program jumped in price to same buyer

Not sure if this a factor in this case, but had this from Interparcel today:

The US has introduced new tariffs on goods imported from China, which

may affect your shipping costs. Here's what you need to know:

A 10% tariff is now applied to all goods made in China, regardless of where they are shipped from.
The de minimis rule (duty exemption for goods under $800) no longer applies to Chinese-made products.

The OP's magazines weren't made in China though.

I've never actually used GSP and am curious, when you list an item for sale with GSP shipping do you have to specify the country of origin of the item? And on a similar note do you have to specify the final package size / weight, Iwas never sure how they know what shipping to charge otherwise.

Not a factor.

Hi

There are no new tariffs from the US to the UK . Even if there was that wouldn't explain an almost 3 fold jump in the shipping price .

@wellingnorth  you're definitely on the right track here.

The de minimis exemption applied to shipments from any country and basically allowed any shipment under $800 to come into the US exempt from taxes and duties - that exemption was removed earlier this week, which would cause GSP rates to be higher for all items under $800 because they would now have taxes and duties applied that they did not previously.

On top of that, you have the 10% tariff for items made in China - which would have excluded items under $800 with the old de minimis rules, but no longer did with the changes made earlier this week.

So two things happened with the GSP prices from UK to US:

First, there was a "technical issue" eBay admits incorrectly increased the rates by £90 or more - that issue was resolved and is no longer a factor.

But when it was resolved, the rates came back down some, but not all the way back to what they were last week, because eBay has had to adjust them to account for those changes earlier this week that would have customs/duties and/or tariffs applied that they didn't before.

However...just to throw another wrench in things, President Trump made a new executive order today, reinstating the $800 de minimis exemption, for now at least...though it could go away again in the future.

In theory, that should allow GSP rates to go back to what they were before but it's been a crazy week with lots of back and forth and things are still in flux so - whether or not eBay will put the rates back to where they were before is still up in the air and may take a few days for them to undo what they had to do to account for the previous change.

It's a giant mess and for once, I won't blame eBay for it 😂 ....the US government has been playing ping pong with the issue all week and I do not envy anyone having to try to figure out compliance and logistics right now.
