Existing listings after February 4th '25

Sorry if this has been covered but there are so many comments on various threads I couldn't find the answer.

Does anyone know what will happen to the final price of items listed before Feb 4th but active after the change date?

Will the ebay system increase all the BIN prices automatically or will it only apply to listings made from that date onward? I found this on the seller pages "For UK-based private sellers, the Buyer Protection fee will immediately be added to all existing Buy-It-Now listings (excluding Vehicles, Classified Ads, and Property). The fee will be added to Auction and Buy-It-Now listings created on or after 4 February, 2025, including relisted listings."

I have read several times & I find it contradictory. Firstly saying it will be added automatically to existing & then to those added on or after?

Is this just a very clunky way of saying all listings, existing or new, will have the fees added after the 4th? Of course ending all and relisting before 3rd could give 30 days grace &  I expect they have made sure that cannot be done.

Many thanks everyone.

I don't see a u-turn, after all this is a fee to replace seller fees. The only option is to go back to seller fees, not, "it's free to sell".  They've really cornered themselves in framing the new fee as a protection service because we all know this is a revenue generating fee.

It works for Vinted because it's a relativly new platform that needs to earn consumer confindence, I don't feel that is going to wash on the market leading platform that has had a money back guarantee for many many years.

I can see tweaks being made though, I think a reduced fee (no fee?) could be brought in if you're paying from your eBay balance as that would reward using the platform regularly and stimulate growth.

Yes, it's certainly revenue-generating.

What's odd (or not at all odd) is that the algos seem to be targeting the private sellers of high value/low volume items to 'upgrade' to business accounts.

Presumably because having them subscribe as a 'business' would bring in far more than the limited buyer fees?

Conversely, Ebay may not be at all bothered about businesses operating on 'private' accounts as long as their sale volumes remain high.

These changes and deliberate scaremongering will do nothing to alleviate matters for genuine businesses while potentially driving some users away.

I have sold an item yesterday, and like many, nothing changed. No mention of fees paid by the buyer. The thing is I've changed my prices on the 3rd expecting to get the extra fees applied.

Customers will not understand when the fees will come into effect, as  the prices wouls have changed 3 times within a short period of time.

Anyone knows wht's happening ?

It'll be 'in February' but nobody seems to know when. Least of anyone from Ebay - all their suggestions have been for dates in the past.

Apparently, this is Ebay's 'exciting new way of working'.

The Buyer Protection fee is calculated as:

  • A flat fee of up to £0.75 per item, and
  • 4% of the item price up to £300, and
  • 2% of any portion of the item price from £300 to £4,000

Any portion of the item price over £4,000 won't incur any additional fee.

If multiple identical items are purchased in the same order, the fixed portion of the fee of up to £0.75 is only charged once.

If a buyer bids on an auction or makes an offer on a listing, the Buyer Protection fee is included in their auction or offer amount, so they know exactly how much they'll pay if they win the auction or if their offer is accepted. The seller sees the auction or offer price without the fee, so they know exactly how much they'll receive. As the Buyer Protection fee is variable, the fee amount that the buyer actually pays is calculated as part of the final auction selling price.

When a buyer sends a counteroffer, you'll see the buyer's price breakdown, including the amount you'll receive and the Buyer Protection fee paid to eBay, so you'll have all the information you need to accept or decline the counteroffer.

Examples of how we calculate the Buyer Protection fee

This is fundamentally broken, AI cant even fix this problem right now.   I mean it.  I even called EBAY support and they have no solution yet and its being raised all the time apparently.

I had alot of exisiting listings that say are buy it nows at £9.99   £19.99  and £29.99 for example.    It still shows as this price in my listings and looks normal.   However since the 4th - it turns out....If you look for your listing in incognito mode (or was a buyer would) that the listing now says £11.23   or like £22.48   and £32.23  for example.  I hope you get what i mean here. You would be oblivious if I hadnt had spotted this.     Its affected my sales,  who on earth would want to buy an item that will cost them £22.48.     I am totally happy to take the hit - but there is no tool to actually reduce all my listings so the revert back to the the customer as the original £9.99 price.   I really hope you guys understand what i mean.  Trust me , doing it with the 4% deduction, then 75p deduction etc- doesnt work.  The maths is still wrong - trust me ive tried.

Got this on my home screen.

And when I click through I get this banner on the listing.

0% off plus £1.20 more than initally advertised to me on the homescreen. What an amazing offer!

This is such an unprofessional mess.

You may have noticed no change on your items because of this announcement eBay made a few days ago:

Starting from 4 February, Buyer Protection will be live to give buyers more peace of mind when shopping on ebay.co.uk. To minimise any potential disruption on our platform, the Buyer Protection fee will be gradually rolled out across items listed by private sellers, starting in Electronics and coming to all eligible categories in the following weeks.

That's beautiful.

"Go to eBay, where Offers mean you pay more!"

I absolutely love that.

The people behind this rollout deserve a standing ovation.

8% off suggests the item was reduced from £13.05. You'd be better off buying with no offers at all.

Offers with a 'minus' percentage are usually a very poor deal.

The prices have changed. Try to revise a price and just on top where the
price is, you will see the added cost to customer.

When I go to revise my listing like this item, there is the additional
£13.22 , so customer will pay £338.22.
This added protection is like on the Shpock platform. I can see customers
shopping now elsewhere.

Interestingly if you look the exact same item on ebay.com rather than ebay.co.uk it will be cheaper to buy it there.... so if the transaction is made over the UK site the buyer now pays the fee and if it is made over the .com site then the seller pays a fee? Seems like Ebay has not though this through... greed...
