Existing listings after February 4th '25

Sorry if this has been covered but there are so many comments on various threads I couldn't find the answer.

Does anyone know what will happen to the final price of items listed before Feb 4th but active after the change date?

Will the ebay system increase all the BIN prices automatically or will it only apply to listings made from that date onward? I found this on the seller pages "For UK-based private sellers, the Buyer Protection fee will immediately be added to all existing Buy-It-Now listings (excluding Vehicles, Classified Ads, and Property). The fee will be added to Auction and Buy-It-Now listings created on or after 4 February, 2025, including relisted listings."

I have read several times & I find it contradictory. Firstly saying it will be added automatically to existing & then to those added on or after?

Is this just a very clunky way of saying all listings, existing or new, will have the fees added after the 4th? Of course ending all and relisting before 3rd could give 30 days grace &  I expect they have made sure that cannot be done.

Many thanks everyone.

The question was asked in the weekly chat 15.01.25.

The answer from Marco:

'Regarding your question, changes will apply to all listings from the date the new changes take effect. So, listings listed before the date in question, and new listings after the date, will be impacted.'

Maybe worth asking that exact question of the community team on Wednesday.

But my gut feeling is it is a cut of as in no fee on the 3rd then fee applied at one minuet past midnight the 4th.

They could do it existing listing don't get the charge until they renew as in 30 days or auction ends.

I am nor really certain which it is.

Thanks, I thought so otherwise there will be thousands of relisting's on the lead up to avoid for another 30 days & we couldn't have eBay losing all that money could we 😬

I wonder how it will work when an item is mid auction? Bid with no fees, win a day later... Fees.

I think there will need to be an exception for auction listings which are running over the 4th February.

If a bidder has already bid £20.00, before the 4th, I don't see how eBay could just amend this to £21.55.

The wording that I asked about is simply poor grammar, which confused me. But it means all BIN that are live as of the 4th will have the charges imposed. All listings made new after 4th inc auctions will have the increase. A way of saying auctions that span the date will not be affected.

What galls me is for the first time ever sales for charities will have these fees deducted from the gross amounts.

Confusing though as it is a BUYERS cost. So if an auction finishes after 4th February then as a buyer the 'tax' is due? Say you reserved something in a B&M shop, went to collect say a week later at which time VAT had changed. Would you expect to pay the VAT when reserved or when you actually paid for it?

Has ebay sent an email to all ebayers stating when buying from private sellers they will pay more?  Cant say I have seen much publicity on this and not all buyers sell.

Have been madly rearranging items for sale to finish before 4th even changing all BINS to auction. Time is almost out for starting 5 day auctions.

So if I list an auction item on 1st February at a starting price of  £1.00 and some bids before 4th February and wins the auction after the 4th February, what will they pay? Surely it can't be £1.00 plus fees?

As it looks at the moment, yes that's right. There hasn't been any information to what will happen to auctions,  just that it will apply to all listings. It will be up to the buyer to decide if they want to pay £1.79 for winning a £1 auction.

Oh dear. Also just realised this Buyer Protection is per item, not per transaction like the old 30p seller's fee.

I thought sellers will be allowed to opt out at 4th Feb and then made compulsory in March ??

The wording on the holp page may not be the best but I don't see that it contradicts itself.  The first line clearly relates to existing listings (Buy it Now style listings only) and the second line to listings created on or after 4th February, so existing Auction style listings will not be affected.

What will happen to my existing listings?

For UK-based private sellers, the Buyer Protection fee will immediately be added to all existing Buy-It-Now listings (excluding Cars, Motorcycle & Vehicles, Classified Ads, and Property). The fee will be added to Auction and Buy-It-Now listings created on or after 4 February, 2025, including relisted listings.

Listings that are relisted or renewed on or after 4 February will be subject to the fee.

I am suspending all my items (bar one auction that clears tomorrow) from midnight today Feb.3rd. I am likely to move to another platform as I refuse to be ripped off by eBay. I suggest all those against this do the same. Send them a message!

To clarify i got this response on the weekly chat last week

Hi moldosgifts, thanks for your patience on this.

It will work the way I said, if the bidding process starts before the 4th of February, the listing won't be impacted by the changes, so it will be handled/processed in the old/current way. If the bidding process starts after the changes take effect, then yes, the listing will be impacted by the changes.

Thank you,

Marco

So if your auction has no bids on the 4th it will get a buyer fee applied if your item has bids already on the 3rd it wont it is up to midnight.

3rd bids no buyer fee at midnight

3rd no bids buyer fee at midnight

Ceases to be worth it if you only sell low prices items. Move on.
