Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

I'm a private seller. Items I sell are between £2.90 - £10. Is It just me or will ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb make it near impossible to sell competitively. A few months ago Ebay got rid of Sellers' fees for private sellers, which was a welcome move. But this new change and getting rid of multi-buy discount for private sellers will make it worse than it was with the original fees.

Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

The Vertical Strategy of fostering high value buyers in Focus Categories like luxury handbags, over-priced trainers etc. was a few quarters back.  The CEO announced like it was some sort of triumph that 'low value buyers' had declined while his Strategy was doing fine.  Then a couple more quarters where it was said to be continuing to grow, but no figures(?).

Since then I don't think it's been mentioned.  Which take to mean it isn't growing any more.  I don't think it was ever a serious strategy, like you there are not that many people who would several thousand on a handbag several times a year.  Especially on ebay, even with their 'authentication' service.

I think the whole thing was just a cover to fool investors into thinking ebay had some plan as seller numbers and sales continued to fall.  All this was somewhere about the time that IS was introduced and the old Collectables categories swept away.

My sales took a step down and never recovered as, I'm sure, did those of many others into collectables.

Even if I hadn't stopped selling here last November, I think SD would have stopped me, as again, it will be the line in the sand for many others, leading to yet another decline in private sellers and even harder hard times for many of the businesses that rely on them.

I am completely amazed that the CEO thinks that people will buy high end luxury goods on Ebay.

Yes well put, i'm not listing here any more and SD will be the final straw then i will close all sales down. I have a small business i always buy my fish food from and i see that he sells in another place as well £1.75 less so he will still get my trade, i doubt that i will be buying on here much in the future

But a lot of people do, and it always astounds me.

The Amazon thing is interesting There was a time when I frequently purchased items on ebay because of the price. The exact same same items were often available on Amazon but were more expensive so I was happy to buy on ebay and wait 2/3 days for them to  arrive in the post.

Over recent months though I have been buying a lot more on Amazon primarily because the items are now cheaper than ebay with the bonus of next day delivery. I am guessing that many (but not not all) 'Business Sellers' are finding that this platform is losing it's attraction and viability.

@parsley2003

"... hope for their sakes..."?  I'm struggling a bit with that comment.  This isn't your Great Aunt Agatha, who's currently struggling with double pneumonia, where to whole family hopes for her sake that she soon recovers.  This is ebay we're talking about and their ability to generate self-inflicted wounds.

Sure, you do you.  However I'm not going to lose any sleep hoping anything for ebay's sake.  I think a lot of other people won't either, as evidenced by the many sellers who previously sold here without giving competition a second thought, but have now been galvanised into looking around.  I'm sure in many cases it took a great deal to push such people out of their comfort zone.  Truly astonishing ineptitude.

I’ve always bought my haberdashery items from eBay sellers as the stall on our market shut down ages ago.
likewise my cats’ treats.
the sellers have put little thank you cards in the orders recently on business cards with email addresses and phone numbers

they have never invited me to purchase away from eBay as we all know this contravenes the rules.

but I am certainly free to ring them of my own volition at any time I choose

I just looked the seller up in a market place and there they were. I rescue animals and have to buy a lot of food and stuff for them, the reason i sell on here, or did, not for myself but for them

Because search is so bad on here i use Google search, and more often than not i find things cheaper on other sites, especially business websites. I only buy here as a last resort.

Mainly rehomed not abandoned. People not able to care for them any more. I have a tortoise, 3 snakes, parrot, tropical fish, in the past hamsters (have my own now) mice, lizards. No wild animals though i garden for wildlife. Husband died last year and on one pension with no power help this year it's not easy because many of the animals need heat but i'm managing, though this nightmare doesn't exactly help, Ebay thanked me for my loyalty of 21 years recently 😂

Really worthy parsley. I sincerely hope that you are able to continue to sell somewhere, for both yourself and your animals. Do you not have little touristy craft type markets occasionally? Or could you sell your items in a tea shop perhaps? On a little stand?

maybe someone would be willing to help you out given it’s a great cause and Cornwall is teaming with tourists in the summer months

just brainstorming…….

im glad to hear you’ve found cheaper prices at least.  And bear in mind that as a customer, I do appreciate a little thank you card 😉

That sounds nice and sorry for your loss.

Just an out of the box idea and obviously it depends on your layout but I was thinking Victorian Garden/Chinese Greenhouse style when I read your post.

I'm guessing some may have aquariums but creating a greenhouse around them could in theory help save you some money. The cheap plastic sheet/frame ones would probably work if you could fit them around.

Initial outlay but could save you alot off bills over time.

Protection fee ?

So, it's a *protection racket* !!

Can't we get them arrested for that ?

Seriously, I have had to pay out almost 30 quid for a series of small
purchases since it started two weeks ago .....

Yes, I will spend less

No, I will not discriminate against private sellers because of how the fee
works

There is absolutely nothing in these so-called added *protection*s that I
would subscribe to if I had the choice ....

and why is it mandatory ?

to quote eBay ......

* It’s not an optional fee, as we want everyone to be able to benefit from
these new protections.*

what a load of bull .....

the only thing we share is that we are being ripped off in the same way!

this is a sales tax, by any other name .....

shouldn't they be passing it on to HMRC?
