I'm a private seller. Items I sell are between £2.90 - £10. Is It just me or will ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb make it near impossible to sell competitively. A few months ago Ebay got rid of Sellers' fees for private sellers, which was a welcome move. But this new change and getting rid of multi-buy discount for private sellers will make it worse than it was with the original fees.

You've got to be joking. All the bids are placed by the seller's friends to ramp up the price. Unless it is a very popular and desired object, a rare snowdrop or book, there will be no bidder and you end up gifting your stuff away at 76p. Well, I don't want to fiddle with the price. And auction is stressful as bidders have to watch the clock for the seance to start. It's not funny as they might have completely forgotten about the time.

This is getting comical, farcical, but I just want to cry!

@uk-specials wrote:Sorry this is nonense. You've sold 11,000 items. You are buying up bulk collecitons of postcards and selling them individually. That's a business.
I've got 11,000 postcards in my collection that I decided to collect during the 1970s and 80s. I shall soon have to go into a care home, so I'm selling off my postcards, Why do you think I'm running a business?
Actually I just made all that up, I've never kept a postcard in my life, apart from a few from particular friends. And I'm not going into a care home soon, as far as I know. And I've not looked at the other person's listings. That's because I'm not a bitter troll who enjoys going into threads and derailing them.
But everyone's allowed to post here, so we just have to try to be constructive.

And what has that got to do with you? Most people who collect postcards have 1000s of them.

The confusion arises because IF you sell lots of items that are similar it can look to HMRC like you are trading. Especially if sales are steady and unvarying. Even if they're your own personal possessions and you're definitely NOT running a business.
But that's a matter between an individual seller and HMRC, rather than Ebay. And it doesn't excuse the incessant trolling we see on practically every discussion thread.
As it happens I think Ebay is already tackling the 'steady' sales issue. Many private sellers may find theirs falling off a cliff with these excessive new fees!

The issue over private/business accounts on ebay has nothing to do with HMRC and taxes.
There have been so many posts explaining why that I don't understand why this misunderstanding continues.

I’ve stopped selling on eBay now because I’m still waiting for my money for an item that I sold 6 days ago , the buyer has received the item and left good feedback but still it’s says payment should be sent by Ebay with in the next few days if everything is ok / been delivered or positive feedback .
i was trying to be competitive with selling the odd retro games but now eBay put the little drink on top with buyers protection , they really have took the *bleep*

Sometimes I wonder if eBay care, or is this the master plan to get rid of the private seller and just be a business site?

Unfortunately, feedback does not release funds until the new system comes in at the end of Feb
For the moment, you will have to wait 14 days to get your money when you do not send tracked

I think we'll get paid out quicker if we use the Ebay 'Simple delivery' link.
Funny how that works, isn't it?

eBay want to get rid of business sellers trading on private accounts
eBay does not want to get rid of GENUINE private sellers selling their own unwanted items
What they do want to get rid of is people who buy, make or grow items to sell, illegally listing them on private accounts

No that's just a front for ripping off their fast diminishing users. They don't care who you are, they just.want your money.I wouldn't trust this site anymore than I'd employ Keir Starmer as a bin man.

"The issue over private/business accounts on ebay has nothing to do with HMRC and taxes."
But there is more than one type of issue here.
Are you suggesting that private sellers who sell their own personal possessions SHOULD start running a business?
13-02-2025 8:50 AM
I’d love to see kier have to work as a bin man
he might actually have to do an honest days work
And he keeps banging on about being from a working class family 😂😂😂😂 so let him see what it really looks like. On a bin man’s wages without his expenses and freebies obviously 🙄

'Are you suggesting that private sellers who sell their own personal possessions SHOULD start running a business'
I don't believe that's been suggested? Nor should it be.

Agreed! It is absolutely pathetic. They are driving private seller/buyers away or is that really their end game here...
