I'm a private seller. Items I sell are between £2.90 - £10. Is It just me or will ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb make it near impossible to sell competitively. A few months ago Ebay got rid of Sellers' fees for private sellers, which was a welcome move. But this new change and getting rid of multi-buy discount for private sellers will make it worse than it was with the original fees.

As far as I can make out, they'll only find out when they pay for the item.

So the buyer would find out that the private seller is really in disguise and is actually a business? How can they?
They would only know of the BPF they are paying... and I cannot see how they would know as per @myriad*seller suggests?
If there is a way, please enlighten, thank you.

of course you do! However you are in a minority of 1 as no one else seems to have seen it, even though there are plenty of us looking out for anything new that is happening!

So, a buyer commits to buying an item for £10 then has to pay £11.15 when they check out.
But they don't find out until after they've made that commitment.
Not helpful...

Nope, that's incorrect.
The buyer will see the item priced at £11.15 on the listing.
When they go to pay at eBay checkout they'll be paying £11.15, and there, they will see that breakdown, that is, £10 for seller item, and £1.15 for a Buyer Protection Fee.
Now, will they then message the seller and ask what this fee is for? Yep, I believe seller's will be inundated with that question!

try reading what is actually said by the person commenting, Valueadded is based in the US and says at the last sentence that that is why there is a time difference!!

@sammylou40 this is incorrect.
The buying fee is now rolling out and live on some listings in Electronics categories - here's what it looks like.
The buyer will see an item price on the listing page that is inclusive of both the seller price and the fee:
And then at check out it shows what the fee amount is and that it is included in the price.

not sure why anyone who regularly reads these threads would ever believe what CS ever say, one of the reasons i would rather come on here and ask advice than waste time phoning them.

There is a post on another thread here about the 6th Feb date being shown, it was a tweet from ebay support or something? Since then, eBay have confirmed that they are " working on it"... it is apparently delayed.

How about that they actually know what they are talking about and you so clearly do not. Take a vote here and find out how many would listen or ask Value for help or advice against how many would go to someone with an obvious axe to grind?

Many thanks for your contribution

So, when a potential buyer sees the BPF, isn't that an opportunity to ask... Why aren't you a Business?
06-02-2025 12:01 PM
Why? I have actually made sales over the past few days (which is good for me) and so far none of the proposed changes have affected me, even got the payments as usual which i was not expecting. The lack of changes does not mean that buyers have stopped buying or that e bay have stopped paying.

nothing is happening about SD next week, at least there has been no notification of it yet.

By far the most balanced contribution from a Business Seller on this topic (most that have commented have only chipped in to gloat)

Why would the BPF be an opportunity? I would not ask a seller if they were a business or private, I would be looking at the item, price, feedback, delivery ( yes in the order) before making a decision to purchase...
I certainly would not be opening communication to ask "Why aren't you Business?" or should I say
" hey are you really a business and using a private account which is so unfair to all true businesses who pay shop fees, and did you know you have caused so much angst between business sellers and genuine private sellers, and now you are saving fees further, so reduce your item to cover the buyers fee or I will go elsewhere..blah blah blah ?"

'I don't see how that can work on auction listings,'
That's a good question, and until we actually see one we're not going to find out for sure!
But there has to be a logical way of doing it; perhaps something like...
The Starting price includes the BPF.
Then when you go to place a bid, your placed bid goes up by the BPF% +.75p *as well* as what you placed as a bid, with a box next to your bid showing the breakdown of what's going on. (so you don't get a nasty suprise if you win)
OR;
When you place a bid, the ebay system takes out the %+.75p from the total bid and only shows the seller the smaller amount (so there would have to be minimum amounts that you are able to bid in order to make this happen......? ) and the buyer doesn't get the nasty suprise.
Arrgh...now I've given myself a headache and have to go back to my first sentence.....
'That's a Good Question!' ... (and I dunno the answer🤣)

Even as " collectors" they are still your personal items... some collections can go up or down in value.
If any item sells for over £6000 then Capital Gains Tax could apply... that is because the item or even a set of items sold to the same person, would be classed as an asset.
There are some exemptions on CGT so people would need to research for themselves.
