Hi everyone, I recently joined for like 1 month and I start selling as a private seller , and now eBay is asking me to provide national insurance number.
"New UK digital sales reporting legislation requires sellers with 30 or more sales, or who have sales exceeding £1740 in a calendar year, to register this information"

Couldn't have put it better myself. I'm fine with eBay contacting HMRC to let them know I've passed the set threshold - I've nothing to hide, and one look at my current and previous sales should tell the casual observer that I'm just an enthusiastic private seller constantly decluttering. If HMRC needs to get in touch to confirm I'm just selling off personal property, they already have my NI number.
BUT, give away the cornerstone identity thieves crave the most to a commercial company? You'd have to be insane to put yourself in that kind of jeopardy. And let's not forget that eBay is an American company, based in a country currently in chaos and subject to the whims of the tyrannical Donald Trump, where personal data is being mined on a daily basis.

Whatever you think it should be, the law says differently.

"......... it should be hmrc contacting sellers not the seller giving over personal information to ebay let hmrc do their job not ebay so if you go over the sales limit let hmrc contact the sellers directly and guide them through to be compliant" - It is a seller's responsibility to ensure they are selling in compliance with the law; whether it be Tax laws, Consumer Rights laws, or Unfair Trading Practices. All information to this effect is readily available on government websites for those buying, making or restoring to sell.
It would not be practical for HMRC to be contacting every digital platform every time a member went over the reporting guidelines and contacting that member. There is no need as the submission of the relevant Tax Identification Number via a digital platform enables all the work to be completed in seconds by HMRC's Connect software which will consolidate the information related to an individual seller from any and all platforms on which they are active in any OECD country.
Only when the figures meet whatever algorithms HMRC have set would an HMRC official have to get involved, and then only after a 'nudge' letter had been forwarded and responded to ...... or not.

Not really sure what exactly you are agreeing with as most of the post you have responded to makes no sense at all.

Totally agree.. I've never really do well in past on ebay. Buy lately this year decided to try sell some my things O need to dehoard & use the money for other things. ( having to by medication I should get nhs but our health care us too slow) nothing really happened jan Feb
But suddenly march April a few items have gone and other day a matching outfit sold instantly ( it was one I was about take down as still wanted keep) but they paid its full worth and suddenly I had a alert saying N.I needed. So annoying. Now I don't want sell any of my clearing out in hear if its gonna cause problems with HMRC. I'm not upto dealing with them just for clearing my stuff out. I even went through the government website and it says I wouldn't be required do anything or pay anything . So hate I have deal with this now. This what happens when labour get im

Nothing to do with the Labour government. The regulations were agreed long before they got in.

Really! How quickly did they start withholding your funds?
20-04-2025 2:57 PM
Yh but only heard about them since they got in. Never before tbh

Have you. That sucks. Yes this country is a joke. Health care is none. GPs treat you stupid. A lot of people buying news elsewhere. I have back problems which has caused weight gain have a feeling I have fibromyalgia. Thing is they write off to places & you never here back. Been 18months & never heard from 1 programme to help with health & you can only get certain meds Once you are on it but it's been that long I've just spent £500 to just buy 3months worth myself & exchanged sales money for laptop and physio aides. So not only am I having buy things that should be free on NHS ( considering all taxes I paid when I was well enough work) now ive got to worry about the Tax man nailing me for having sacrifice my own goodies 😅
It's all well & good people saying oh you have nothing worry about if private seller, but we all know full well that's not how our corrupt system & government work. They Always go after the poorest & most vulnerable, as they see us as easy pickings.
And Thankyou Toby. I hope we both do. I try to clear out locally but I just don't seem to get interest that way. I will jist stay hoarded if I have to. Not given my stuff away to end up in debt 😅
Best wishes Jo

Lol I've literally just seen like a message thing I'm not use to using here & at first I thought person was just trying to be reassuring. But they've messaged twice & are actually bleating on at me that because some my clothes are expensive I will have to provide bank statements & receipts to HMRC lol. Like what would my bank statements have to do with clothes I bought cash years before I even owned my bank account!!
This is the exact attitude people are worried about. Not sure how they expect receipts you don't have from a item from 1999 lol
