Hi All,
I’m a bit confused about how cancellations / refunds work as a seller and can’t seem to find a straight answer.
If a buyer cancels and order, and I refund them using my eBay balance, when / will that money be returned to me?
I feel like I’m being stupid, but if I’ve just refunded £22.50 out of my eBay balance for an order that I’ll never receive a payout for, I’m obviously missing something.
Thanks,
Thomas

If you refund from your balance you will keep the payment once it clears. Why do you think you'll never receive the payout?

They pay and it goes into your balance. You refund and it comes from your balance. If you withdrew it before they cancelled, itll charge ur card.

Sorry but i do not understand why should the money be returned to you

When a refund is made and there's no money in the Available section of the Payment Summary, then the back up method is used, which is usually the seller's bank account.
If the refund has been made from a bank account, the payout from that item, which didn't make it to the Available section in time, is released to the seller.
Hope the above explains the issue.

It's not a return of money, it's the release of the original payment from the buyer when the refund has already been paid from another source.

Because the refund was taken out of my available balance. But when a buyer purchases an item, that payout sits in your pending balance for a few days, or until delivery. I assume the money from the cancelled purchase remains as part of your pending balance? To make up for the cost of the refund?

Thank you I did not look at it I that way.

When you refund for a cancellation, the refund is taken from available funds or your bank account. The original payment from the buyer will still show as pending and it may (in my experience) be up to a day before it is released to you.
