Hi there,
I sold a high value item to a buyer and they made a false claim that the item was damaged and returned the wrong item. Ebay are currently telling me they are investigating. what can I do about this?? Ive already reported the buyer and made a report with Action Fraud. Ebay keep telling me to wait for an investigation

I made a post about my outcome on your thread, but it was a successful outcome for me at the end after I appealed this to ebay complaints resolution. You need to get the Action Fraud report filled in, and get that emailed to ebay. Use the live chat on the app, and you can find this by pressing the Help tab on your account profile. Once ebay have recieved, you should hopefully have a positive outcome like me. Good luck!

As to the suggestion that you can use the "Small Claims Court" or whatever it is now called.
"Moneyclaim" perhaps.
The difficulty is that it is for "civil debts" where there is little or no doubt that money is due.
The situation is that - as set out - you have been the victim of a criminal act and I wonder if the SCC would have any jurisdiction?

I had a very similar experience! I sold a high-value item, and the buyer claimed they received the wrong item and returned an empty box. eBay’s customer service was initially quite inconsistent—it took a few attempts to reach an agent who acknowledged that I could upload an Action Fraud report. Despite that, eBay closed the case and refunded the buyer, but I appealed right away and requested a call from customer service.
Ironically, the buyer actually helped me out - they relisted the exact item I sold them using my original photos!
Thanks to the efficiency of the agent I spoke with, my appeal was successful, and I received credit back within minutes after the call.
For anyone in a similar situation, I definitely recommend having customer service call you. Here’s the link to request a callback: https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/eua?id=5275.
