Bidder has just created a brand new ebay account and placed a high bid, any red flags there?

Bidder has just created a brand new ebay account in the last 5 hours, and placed a high bid (at least £175), any red flags there? Any way of verifying this bidder, or finding out if they have placed any other high end bids on any other items?

On the kew garden coin?

There is no way to verify a new member.  Members join in the thousands daily, some just to buy that one item.

However,  I think I'm right in saying coins are not covered for loss in transit by most carriers,  and yes eitrher with a brand new or established buyer,  they can open a case for item not as described on receipt.

Personally, if I was to sell an item of high value as this, I would make it a collection item, and with a new ruling a code has to be presented on collection to prove that collection.

Of course this still leaves a case for item not as described to be opened,  or a charge back from a payment provider.

Tis coin is the most valuable modern 50p coin however, it is a worry when you have a bid of £175 on yours when there are others for sale as Buy it Nows for under a £175 and indeed many have sold for under this amount.  Makes you wonder why this new member has bid so much?

A lot of faith and trust is involved with selling on eBay.

adding to the advice already given -

As you are using a private listing you will lose many bidders as they shy away from private listings for high ticket items.

You've set up your listing to keep bidders identities private, which is an old feature that sellers of sensitive items (such as incontinence pads) used to tick to prevent the listing title from showing in the buyers feedback. Now that listing titles no longer show in buyers feedback it's a pretty obselete feature and viewed with a degree of suspicion by buyers. I probably wouldn't bid on an auction if it was in place.

So, we can't tell you if your buyer has bid on any other coins.

It's nigh on impossible to tell who is a new eBayer who's just set up an account and who is out to part you from your money (suffice to say, if they set out to do this, they can). Whilst most sales go through without a hitch, some don't, it's a risk you take selling on any online platform.

There is an old adage that you should really only list what you can afford to lose, really.

@tressygirl  - Morning Special Delivery by 1 is the only service which insures for coins.

To the OP, I would suggest for the condition of that coin thats a very strong price already, exceptional items near enough uncirculated are getting that price.

Pricing on that Kew Gardens has eased somewhat in the past 12 months or so. Its always made me wonder though why when its not the rarest 50p it has long commanded the pricing it has.

I suspect you will get a fake "payment" email from "Paypal" (its NOT from Paypal) and then you will be asked to send the coin and you won't have been paid

OR the buyer will ask you to send to a click and collect point, so you do not have their real name or address, and then you will be forced to refund (either a chargeback or buyer sends back an empty envelope claiming no item was in the parcel).

When buyers over pay for something they can definitely buy cheaper on Buy It Now from other sellers you should rightly suspect a scam is in progress.

Another scam I have noticed is buyer opens a return, then return label ALTERED to their 'brother's' address. Seller receives no item back, but tracking shows delivered. Upon seller query to ebay, ebay release the hold, but refund buyer anyway from their own pocket. Ask me how I know about this scam 🙂 .
