The seller charges for delivery so its no extra cost to them
I bought an item for £100 and they sent it via 2nd class.
I asked why they use 2nd class as lack of tracking is worse for customers, £20 max insurance could leave them out of pocket and its only 10/20p more for tracked 24/48 parcels.
They said they use 1st/2nd class as this can be collected from their home.
I said that tracked 24/48 can be collected from their home.
They've ignored me and still sell items 1st/2nd class.
Am i wrong that they can be collected? is there another reason to choose 1st/2nd class?

As long as you got your item and they didn't charge you for a higher service then used a lesser service I wouldn't worry about why they only use non tracked services. It's their decision to use only 1st and 2nd class post, and as the saying goes there's nowt as funny as folk.

It is the seller's choice.
As you say, if the item goes missing, they can't claim because they used an inappropriate service, but some people just won't be helped.
I never understand why anybody uses RM 'Signed For' - again, that only compensates up to £20 and Tracked 24/28 seem much more reliable.
However, as I said, it is the seller's choice and there is no point trying to discuss it. You have stated that the seller ignored your message about home collection so now is the time to walk away and leave them to do what they have chosen to do.

Some sellers choose to "self-insure". So few packages go missing that it isn't even worth paying the extra 14p for each one, or whatever it is. If they metaphorically put 10p into a jar every time they sell something, there will probably be enough in the "jar" to cover any losses.

I would also add that 2nd class items fall within the metric that the regulator uses to measure and report Royal Mail's performance levels; Tracked 48 performance levels are not monitored. As such I have always found that straight 2nd class is less likely to be delayed that Tracked 48 although that situation may now change with the new 2nd class delivery schedules.
Personally I use 2nd class for items under £20 and Tracked for anything above as the majority of my shipments are large letter. My late delivery level is currently 0.37% and this is the highest it has ever been; which says more about the current performance of Royal Mail.

The postage can be booked for collection (but there may be restrictions on where the Courier are collecting from).
If the Seller has his/her postage set for automatically combining postage. The Large Letters and Parcel size for RM48 Tracked will not combine together automatically, so this may be a reason they have chosen to use RM Standard postage & may have added extra insurance cover (it must make sense to the Seller).
For years I have Automatically Combined postage UK (but I do not have any bulky parcels) & I do have an upper limit postage cost set, so it works for me as Large Letters and Letters will be delivered with a parcel with RM48 TRK & is cost effective for Buyers.
The UK Postage settings I use are
RM48 TRK for Parcels,
2nd RM Standard/RM48 TRK for Large Letters (Buyer chose)
2nd RM Standard/RM48 for Small Letters (Buyer chose)

I find the compensation claim so ridiculously complicated that the compensation isn't usually worth claiming for. You are expected to prove what you paid for an item which is problematic for me. Most of the time I'd choose second class and and save the 15p

The annoying thing for me is the lack of tracking, especially when this seller charges customers for postage. I'd rather pay 10-20p more for the tracking
