Advise on item returned as buyer was not at address

Hi there i sold a item...well it was 2 items but 1 order and shipped in a box together.

The buyers address was at their workplace a university, they eventually messaged me saying tracking (48hr tracked) showed delivered but that its not there and tracking also shows its being sent back to sender.

I checked tracking and it did show and still said delivered but in the details section said its being send back to me as buyer is no longer at the address

The buyer stated she has no idea why as works postal office always takes parcels and took on previous week for her.

Also tracking showed a photo evidence the post person takes as proof of 2 parcels on floor....neither were actually the one i sent as one was small and the other though a brown box was different... different tape and wonky put on label.

Anyway i spoke to ebay and they said they side with me as it was shown delivered or attemptthe buyer did ask if it comes back for me to post again but i will not use my own money to post it back as it was not my fault even via ebay rules.

Ebay stated i could give buyer my PayPal details outside of ebay to pay delivery again which i am not arranging stuff outside of ebay...or giving my email address out.

At the same time i do not think its fair for buyer as well to fully lose money.

Would it be deemed acceptable if i partially refund.....i would just deduct postage amount because if i full refund then i will acrually lose out on the postage cost won't i and i am not willing to lose money on a issue that is not caused by me.

Royal mail will not do anything either as they said its been sent back so as far as they are concerned theres no claim yo be made by anyone.

You fulfilled you part as the seller. You’re a private seller so shouldn’t have to deal with returns when there’s no fault of yours.

The fair thing would be to refund their money minus the amount you paid for P&P (after receiving the item back – you still may not get it!).

They assumed they could get post delivered to that address without issue – that’s on them; and another seller would just keep their money and the returned item.

Of course, how the buyer sees it will determine what feedback they give. eBay may remove bad feedback for this transaction, on request, but looking at these forums it seems to be anyone’s guess whether they do.

As tracking shows delivery attempted you are fine for any INAD case.

Message the buyer say it will be refunded on return.

Once it returns refund in full

If damaged claim from royal mail

Once you have your item back I'd issue a partial refund so you don't lose out, I certainly wouldn't be negotiating with the buyer to resend it.

eBay will side with you if your buyer were to open an eBay item not received claim.

Why should i full refund and lose out on postage i will have paid though thats my issue

While i know i don't actually have to do anything i do think partial refund minus the postage i paid is the only decent thing all round

Ebay said they will remove any bad feedback since its shown as delivered and then shown as a issue with the buyers address.

I tried to do a partial refund on the case thats open but it only has option to fully refund.

Tomorrow is the day ebay said to contact them so they can close in my favour.

I think i will let them close in my favour and be done with it. I already had a bad negative because someone ordered something for 2.50 16th dec and decided to wait 28 days to open case and say it never arrived

They chose 2nd class and not tracked option. They never messaged before to say its not come so i can send another as i had 2 or refund them. I refunded as soon as case was open

And said it will be lost as run up to Christmas and often 2nd class stuff can get lost.

But ebay wont delete that negative as it was not tracked and so they blame me for it lol.
