I generally find it more convenient to use Royal Mail than carriers. eBay sent an email which I understood to say that from 19 May it will only allow sellers to use carriers and will not allow them to use Royal Mail. Is this correct, or will there be an option for sellers to use Royal Mail if it suits their needs better?

If you are on/are moved to "mandatory" Simple Delivery, then for many types of items* the postage label will be generated automatically by ebay; you don't get to choose a carrier (other than see below); you can't use stamps etc.
If you don't want to use other carriers than Royal Mail you can turn them off here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/ship/prf Evri is currently the only other carrier. Note, in some cases - e.g. your package it too big for Royal Mail but within Evri's limit, you could get an Evri label. (Possibly there are other reasons as well as size/weight.)
(*) Some items you can't send Simple Delivery and some items may default to Simple Delivery but you could change to custom postage. In those cases you can send how you like - RM Special Delivery using stamps, Yodel or whatever.

Would be good if you could sent a screenshot of the e-mail, cerainly not something anyone else has reported. At present SD only offers RM and Evri, unlikely they would exclude RM.

I think you have misunderstood the email.
