Tables delivered but money taken

I have a problem. 
I had a notice on my items that I was away until 19 December. A buyer paid for a nest of tables but I didn’t know for a week as I had no WiFi. 
 He put in a refund request but when we messaged he understood the situation & wanted the tables. We arranged collection. 
He wasnt able to collect for a few days & I waited in on one occasion when he didn’t make collection as planned. He collected eventually on 24 December & I sent Ebay the code he gave me when he collected the tables. HOWEVER EBAY HAVE REFUNDED HIM WITH THE COST OF THE TABLES. I can’t see how to deal with this.

If eBay have refunded him,  you may have automatic unpaid item  case selected for non payers,  then no payment can be made now through eBay as the transaction closed with the refund.

Message the buyer explain what has happened,  and ask them if they can pay you now, which they can do, by cheque,  bank transfer,  a PayPal Friends and Family payment,  or you can send them a PayPal invoice.  Whichever suits you both best,  but nothing to enforce them to do so.

  If  PayPal is used,  email addresses need to be exchanged, this can sometimes be found with the order details >>  Show Contact Info.    If not and you need to ask the seller for this,  make it very, very clear in your eBay messages,  as eBay do read these,  the reason for these exchanges.   Make it clear it's not to be used for an off eBay sale.

As you didn't respond to the refund request in the way ebay expected you to, and the buyer didn't close it either, it went the way of all such cases, i.e  ebay forced a refund.

You will now need to get the buyer to pay outside of ebay.

Thank you for your reply.
It was not easy to get through to EBay. I was up until 2 am trying to explain.
Then this morning I saw EBay had sorted & put the money in my account!! There was also a note from them saying they now realised I had done everything possible.
You are right- the buyer should have cancelled his complaint. The buyer was happy when he collected & said he would give me a ‘positive’
