Seller declined cancellation and subsequently posted the item

I'm a regular eBay buyer (hundreds of purchases in recent years) but we all occasionally make a mistake.

Yesterday, I ordered an item and then immediately realised that what I had ordered wasn't the right specification. Within a couple of minutes I raised a cancellation request and also sent the seller a personal message, explaining why I was cancelling (and apologising for my mistake). At that time, the order had been confirmed but not shipped.

4 hours hours later I received an automated notification from eBay that the cancellation had been refused (and no reply from the seller), together with a separate message confirming that "the seller is packing your order". At best, this is rude (no reply to my message) but it also seems disingenuous that a seller can simply refuse a good faith cancellation and then start dispatching the item.

The seller does not accept returns. Do I have any recourse via eBay?

I'm afraid you do not have any recourse through eBay a seller is not obliged to accept a cancellation request.

A No Returns policy  a choice for Private sellers,  if not in place then peeps would be just buying and returning after perhaps a use , or just because they didn't like it.

I'm afraid if it's posted , nothing you can do asking the seller or eBay for a  return now or refund.

Re: Seller declined cancellation and subsequently posted the item

Thanks for your response. After 22 years as an eBay user, I guess it's time to close my account. I don't want to be part of a community where people can deliberately cheat each other and then hide behind eBay policy.

Re: Seller declined cancellation and subsequently posted the item

It's a harsh ruling if you are the buyer I agree,  but it's not cheating just an eBay ruling.  Look in the seller's shoes if you had to return countless items as a Private seller just selling your unwanted items,  I take it this was a Private seller ? 🤔

When I was selling I did have a No Returns , my items were unwanted clothes and toys, household items and in over a decade of selling, I  only had 2 requests for a return for change of mind,  their messages were polite and I agreed.  If I had  had countless returns for change of mind perhaps I would not have been so quick to accept?  This may also be the case for your seller?

You are upset I understand, but closing a successful buying account after 22 years ?  Ride past this one, and perhaps try and sell that unwanted item,  you never know it might even make you a profit!

Re: Seller declined cancellation and subsequently posted the item

This is not about returning an unwanted item - it's about cancelling a mistaken purchase with 2 or 3 minutes of paying for it, after which the seller refused my cancellation and still dispatched the item.

It was very clear from my apologetic message that I had made a genuine mistake in my purchase, but the seller decided to force me to buy it anyway.

I agree that. technically, it falls within eBay's rules, but it's in very bad faith and not a game that I want to be part of anymore.

If it's any consellation, if the seller had asked here we would have told them to accept the cancellation.
