Mystery - any ideas?

I sold an item and posted via simple first class on the same day (no tracking).

A few days pass by, funds are released to me and the buyer leaves me positive feedback.
Everyone is happy... or are they?

A few weeks pass by and to my surprise, buyer says item not received? I check delivery status with Royal Mail and it shows item not yet delivered?! I contacted eBay and they said I must refund buyer.

Okey so maybe the item just got lost in the post (it happens) Now I hope I am wrong about this ...but what if the buyer has received the item and is pretending it has not arrived, working off the mail delivery update being slow or faulty? (not everyone is honest).

The item was very expensive and because it was a long time passed since the sale, I have since then spent the sale money. Now I'm in a situation of trying to find some money I don't have in order to refund....

Do I give a refund and lose both the expensive item and the money ?

[I do have pictures of postage receipt and feedback screenshot. I won't share here as contain private information]

*bleep* post? Dodgy ebayer?

mystery!

If there's no tracking number showing delivery you have no option but to refund the buyer.

Are you sure that you sent an expensive item out with absolutely no tracking?

Where did you get the postage label from?
