My maximum bid was higher than the winning bid but somehow i didn't win.

I have just bid on an item with my maximum bid being £57.25.

However,  the item sold with a winning bid of £55.39 ...... how does that work?

The winning bid is plus the buyer protection fee which takes it over your bid.
