Incorrect payment details

My bank details were wrong, my account number was correct but the sort code was for my other account at that bank., therefore when a payout was made it went to someone with the same account number as me but with that sort code. Therefore someone at my bank has received my payout. I’ve asked eBay to request the money back so the bank can then flag it but they d said they can’t. I’ve spoke to my bank and they’ve said eBay can just request the money back and the bank can then look into it. EBay has said no they can’t and because the sort code was entered incorrectly they can’t proceed to help.

my bank and I do not understand why they can’t do this. So the person who has no right to money has it and that person hasn’t clearly flagged it to the bank either. Is the ombudsman the only way forward here ?

That doesn't make sense, sort codes identify the bank, not the account holder.

I have no idea whether the ombudsman would help but you need to make sure you have taken all necessary steps first which usually involves formal complaints.

Ebay will probably rely on having used the details you gave them, so they didn't make an error.

Incorrect payment details

Thank you for the reply. Yes I’ve tried to get a resolution with this. I’ve been to the bank who said they can flag the money for the incorrect account, they just need eBay to request a payback. Which they won’t do.

When setting up my bank details there is a direct debit information sheet also, in that has my name the wrong sort code and my correct account number. For that i would only assume that they may have had that flag up as it wouldn’t match with my name when requesting the direct debit information. However that doesn’t seem to be the case.
