I should not have been sent an item, but seller says returns not accepted

I made an offer on an item and immediately received an eBay message saying the seller could take up to 24 hours to respond to my offer.

I immediately retracted my offer, because I wanted certainty, and proceeded to 'buy now' another listed item, which I paid for by ApplePay.

I then found out that the original item I made an offer on had been purchased with an automatic PayPal payment. This was not my understanding of what would happen based on the message received from eBay.

The outcome is that I have paid for two items, which I never intended. I want to return the first item (that I originally made an offer on), but the seller says returns are not accepted.

The item is still in the original packaging that the seller used to send it to me.

What can be done here? How can I appeal this and get some assistance from eBay?

Thanks

Unless it was business seller, not all private sellers accept change of mind returns.

Offers now often mean you to agree pay if accept.

Re: I should not have been sent an item, but seller says returns not accepted

Thanks. The issue I have is that I'm sure I followed a button, or something, that enabled me to retract the offer. If this hadn't been available then I certainly wouldn't have proceed to 'buy now' a different item that was listed, I would have just had to wait to see what the seller's response was.

I feel a bit 'miffed' because the message implied I would have to wait for a response, and I was given the option to retract, which I did. Something has gone wrong somewhere because the seller shouldn't really have been able to accept my offer after I retracted it.

I'm not sure what to try next.

Probably better to unwanted item yourself.
