How do you mark a sold item as collected when it is collected by a courier?

I have sold an item and the buyer has arranged a courier to collect it. I've only sold 1 thing under this system before and they had a QR code for me to scan. Obviously this time I won't have that. The buyer says he will send me a code once he receives the item but I don't know where I stand if he doesn't send that or tries to say there's a problem with it.

The buyer needs to send you the code before you release the item to the courier.

He said he'll send it to me when  he's received the item. What should I do?

Tell him that's not how it works.  His courier is standing in for him ans ebay tells you to get the collection code off the buyer when the buyer collects, not after.  Same goes for courier collection. 

It's a collection code, provided on collection,  not a delivery code, provided on delivery.

However, all not getting it does is delay your payment a bit, sending a courier invalidates the ebay money back guarantee so the buyer can't use it.

If he doesn't give you the code first you can issue a cancellation via the dropdown menu for the item on your orders page.   Use the reason "Something wrong with buyer's address", ie. too far away to collect themselves.  If they've paid the refund will be issued in the process. 

Either way one of you is at risk so one of you has to trust the other, and the buyer has put themselves in this position by not collecting in person.
