Does anyone know why the only way to verify your age is credit card

I'm trying to buy a hedge trimmer, the only option to verify my age is full details of a credit card...I don't have one and have no intention of getting one just to verify my age when in all honesty I have had my account for more than 18 years

It's because your buying a bladed item,so if you don't have a credit card see if you can get a family member or friend to buy for you instead.

You may have held your account for 18 years,  but if there is no credit card on file and now you wish to buy this hedge trimmer , there's no proof that it is you wishing to buy an item which does have an age verification status to be able to buy it.

So a credit card has to be added. A debit card can be held by anyone of any age,  but you have to be of  a minimum age of 18,  to possess a credit card.

If you cannot add one, the only way round this is to ask a friend with a credit card to make this purchase for you.

A credit card payment is a safe and secure way to confirm that the buyer is over 18.  It is the only way of age confirmation that Ebay allow sellers to use.  If you are under 18, you can't be a credit card holder.

I bought craft scissors online, a couple of years ago now, and had to upload a scan of photo ID.  I used my driving license.

However, although I would be happy to pay through Ebay checkout using a credit card, I am not sure that I would be happy to provide photo ID, containg a lot of personal information, to a random individual online.

As advised, you can ask somebody else to buy on your behalf and pay them back.
