I normally send my sales using evri at a local parcel shop, I have some large quite heavy items that I am thinking of listing. Is it possible to get the courier to pickup from my home address as the size is too large for the parcel shop. I know that it is possible if you go direct to the courier but I have not been able to find it in eBay sending options

You will have to ask couriers, but bear in mind there are many reports of pick ups not happening or days late which can damage your account.
No point asking ebay as they cannot commit any courier to collecting.
I would suggest that while it restricts the number of potential buyers, COLLECTION IN PERSON, would save you a lot of headaches.

The answer is yes and no,if your listings are using eBay Simple Delivery the only collection option is with Royal Mail even though Evri are the other carrier
If you do not use Simple Delivery and buy postage from Packlink via eBay then collection is possible or as you say book direct
