Collection code

Hi. I don't normally sell things for collection only but I sold a not very expensive wooden box and the old fellow came over with his son within an hour to collect it.

I asked for a the QR code and he said he didn't have the app. He clearly had a very basic and old mobile.  I let him take the item as he'd paid via PayPal. I  was unaware of the alternative option of entering a 6 digit code to confirm collection. Anyway, I assumed there would be some way to close out the transaction without a QR code and that was when I found out I should have asked for a 6 digit code. I have messaged the buyer through eBay and via text explaining to him where he would be able to find this code and asking him politely to send it to me. He has so far not responded. Any ideas how I can close this transaction? Do I need to contact eBay? I'm less bothered about the £4.99 he paid than looking to eBay like I haven't despatched the item as my metrics are currently excellent.

I appreciate it's my fault for letting him take the item without proof but how do I get out of this hole I dug myself? To be honest I'd normally have been a bit more assertive but both the father and son were a bit odd with the son being completely uncommunicative - he took the box to the van without a word and didn't come back -  and talk of QR codes and apps just went over the dad's head.  I wanted them out of the house asap to be perfectly honest!

cheers!

Re: Collection code

This is  a new system now along with no cash is allowed for collection items,  that you do need that code to enter to confirm collection.

You've done everything you can that is,  messaging the buyer to send you that code, this found in their messages or order details,  and you can then enter this manually.

Unfortunately,  we have not received  the answer what happens when this code is not presented as to how to close the transaction.

All I can suggest is to contact eBay Customer Services see if they can close or suggest how you can close that transaction.  Please,  if you do receive an answer,  that works, come back to us,  and tell us how to do this,  it will help us ,  help many others!

I do recommend contacting Customer Services,  very first thing in the morning at 8 a.m. when the lines first open,  as there's more chance of Dublin answering.

The easiest and quickest way to contact Customer Services is through this link, for a Call Back .

Weekends lines open between 9 a.m. to 6p.m.

Go to your My ebay page Seller hub and under orders mark as Paid and dispatched

Not every one gets the code. Your buyer may not use the app.

Thanks for your response but unfortunately it won't give me that option. The only options I have are QR code or 6 digit code. There is no option to mark it as paid and dispatched.

Re: Collection code

Thanks for your very helpful comment. I phoned Customer Services and they were (I think!) helpful and told me not to worry about it and it would close itself after a couple of weeks. As it turned out the problem resolved itself when later that day the old chap messaged me the code which his son had managed to locate for him.

I learnt a valuable lesson and next time I do a collection only item I will remind the seller to bring either the QR or 6 digit code.

Might present an issue for people using "man with a van" collection services though as I have never yet had one of those turn up with a QR code but it didn't matter because that was when eBay still allowed the seller to mark as collected!
