I bought and paid for an item then requested that it be cancelled. Item was cancelled and I was refunded. However, the item arrved, anyway. The seller is demanding return, which is appropriate, and of course I am willing to return the item. Who is responsible for paying for postage costs? The seller is being quite aggressive.

You are.
Seller should not have refunded if item was already in the post. It should have arrived, you then open a return case, send back at your expense THEN seller refunds.
As it stands there is no way seller can force you to return, but change of mind returns should be at expense of buyer.

The item was cancelled, not refunded. So, a return case did not apply. The item arrived despite the cancellation.

The item arrived despite the cancellation.
Then it's entirely between you and the seller. eBay won't get involved.
Your seller is lucky that you're willing to return the item. If you asked to cancel the sale because you no longer wanted the item I would suggest that you take responsibility for the return postage.
This is what you would have been required to do if you had requested a return after the item had arrived.
