When buying I want to be able to set the default location for an item to UK only. This seems a serious problem when I asked eBay via chat. Does anyone know how I can do this so that this is the permanent option or do I have to waste my time remembering to change location item every time I want to buy something? Perhaps I’d be better back at Amazon!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here.
If you want to set the default location for an item as UK when listing then that will automatically be picked up when you start listing you item. It will also have the name of your town or city followed by UK.
You then go on to mention changing location when you want to buy something. Your addresses are stored here:
https://accountsettings.ebay.co.uk/uas/addresses
Or do you mean that you want to search for items in the UK only? If so, once you've called up a search, tick the UK only box under location (you'll see that on the left of the page). You'll need to select UK for every search though.

Simple enough when searching you select UK only when searching, but need to do this each day.
Comparing with Amazon is not a good idea, as while you might get the service you want, ebay and Amazon are nowhere near the same, as Ebay sells nothing.

Sad that eBay doesn’t care about Buyers. There is a ‘default’ option under item location yet there appears no way of setting that default. Rank stupidity if you ask me. I will search elsewhere to buy in future as eBay not up to scratch.

And eBay doesn’t care either.

If you mean sellers location,
Then search is for ITEM location, seller can be non UK based, but claim to have warehouse here.
