Buyer returning item but is no longer active/registered user

Hi All

Am I being scammed here? I sold a perfectly working laptop for £1600... within 1 hour of it being delivered the buyer reporting faults that it  never had. Anyway conversing back and forth over the weekend after trying to remote troubleshoot it for him. They went silent. Then I got a message saying sorry he was kicked out of the house for a domestic and police got involved. No access to the laptop now.

Today a return is opened.. as I have to I made a label and uploaded it. Thought I would be nice and leave feedback like had to return my item but buyer was all good..

Now it says the user is no longer registered, I cannot see his profile or anything. He had good feedback and the initial sale seemed all good.

Should I be worried by this ? Am I getting scammed somehow ??

Thanks

Wait and see what happens.   Make sure you get the laptop back before initiating a refund.    If it is not rerturned the case will expire eventually.

Absolutely wont refund myself until it re appears.

Will call eBay tomorrow morning anyway and see what they think about it and why the user is suddenly disappeared.

Re: Buyer returning item but is no longer active/registered user

Will call eBay tomorrow morning anyway

Don't be in a hurry to involve eBay! Take the advice given by**peaseblossom** and wait and see.

If the buyer only opened a case today and the buyer is now no longer registered they won't be able to escalate the case after three days for eBay to step in. Unless it's escalated eBay won't get inved and the case will time out.

Are you sure that he's no longer a registered member? If you seach for his username on eBay this should be clear. It takes time to close an account so if it's happened quickly he may have been removed by eBay.

However, don't celebrate too quickly. You don't know how the buyer paid eBay so they could potentially still file a dispute through PayPal or issue a chargeback through their credit or debit card provider. This could happen weeks or even months later, so keep all your proofs of delivery and transaction records safe. Don't rely on online records still being accessible in six months time, download or make hard copies of them.

If this happens let us know, as we may be able to offer further advice. Chargebacks are complicated as they are brought against eBay, not the seller. If eBay decides not to contest the chargeback you would be required by the user agreement to accept their decision and repay them the full amount returned to the card issuer - and pay eBay's admin fees for doing so! There's no guarantee you would even get the laprop back.

As a first time seller you've very quickly discovered what a scary place eBay can be to sell anything of value!

Re: Buyer returning item but is no longer active/registered user

Update Yesterday.

The buyers account is still showing as closed/no longer registered and the label I sent hadnt been used yet

So I called ebay who had a look and said well I cant dicuss the buyers account, but I can tell you generally when an account is suddenly closed its usually due to some abuse of returns or shady goings on (I paraphrase here)

Ebay rep also told me the buyer isn't eligible for buyer protection hence you (me and I had noticed) the money was NOT put on hold when to return was opened.

However my label has been used today.. Guess I will have to see what happens now.

What would anyone else do in this situation now?

All you can do is 'wait and see'.

If the item is returned and it is the right item in good condition, then you should refund.

If there are any issues, come back here to ask.

Re: Buyer returning item but is no longer active/registered user

Update, Buyer attempted to have me off!

Used my tracking number, but changed the address. Sent it to a company on the adjacent street. I managed to track it down and the box was full of Lidle catalogues and the return address was Lidl UK headquarters.

Called ebay right away. Said will look in to it but as far as I'm concerned as there was no hold on the money its mine to keep.

The cheek !!!!
