My purchase had arrived broken and after contacting the seller they advised me to get my money back through buyers protection.
Is this correct and if it is how do I do this on eBay.
I'm going round in circles trying to fathom this out???

Nope, seller doesn't really know how or what, all these new eBay' titles' mean. To be fair, in my humble opinion, they could be composed differently! 🤔
This is how to proceed now.
You have received an item not as described, go right of the item in your Purchase History and from More Actions select... Return this item selecting the reason Item Does Not Match Description or Photos.
The seller needs to accept this case within 3 days and refund, if they want their item back first , they need to pay for that fully tracked return postage, then on receipt of their item they have 48 hours to refund you. If they don't , need to escalate the case, ask eBay to step in, and they'll force the refund.
Never listen to any excuse or promise from the seller to close the case early, they do not seem to understand eBay's rules, so just follow the above and do not forget to escalate.

When you open the case you must use 'arrived damaged' as the reason.

Seller was correct, but it is important ito use the “arrived damaged”, otherwise seller has to repay, and that would defeat the object of buyer protection, which also protects the seller.
