Ebay is asking me to verify my age with a credit card, Why? When I already have a credit card assigned to my account to pay for goods

You may have but if you are purchasing any bladed item, and this even includes a vague description of a blade such as a letter opener or cake slice,  you will need to register a credit card again where they ask , as this is the proof you are over the age of 18, the age in the UK when you can legally buy a bladed item.
