hello, first time ive been here since the boards changed so not sure if im doing this right or simply talking to myself
i took our dog to a free PDSA check up this morning to be told she has fluid retention and isnt simply fat like we thought.Made an appointment with the vet for next week but i have a couple of questions......
is this easy to treat ? will she be on tablets for life or is it simply a course of water tablets and thats it ?
long time since ive been to the vets so have no idea how much this is going to cost , not that its really a concern as if she needs treatment then she'll get it but at the same time i might need to budget

Our vet is about £27 for a consult. I hope it is an easy thing to sort out.

I'm sure you'll be able to find out plenty of info online if you just type in "fluid retention in dogs" into one of the search engines. Hope everything turns out ok. Please keep us updated if you can.

first thing i did was look online, its mainly scare stories about heart failure being the cause. The lady i saw this morning said it probably just needs water tablets and the vet wasnt overly concerned when i said her symptoms

Try not to worry too much until you have seen the vet, it will possibly be water tablets for life but once you know what tablets you need you could problably buy them from one of the animal meds companies online cheaper than from the vet. Loads of humans take water tablets daily with no problems so can't see the dog will be a lot different - just be aware it will need to wee more often please let us know how you get on, good luck

well that was a shock, its not fluid retention its a liver tumour
at 14 years old theres not a lot they can do so its a case of looking after her at home untill things get too painful for her

Oh I am sorry to hear that; I've just lost my 14 year old dog to liver failure, so I know how you are feeling; it's heart-breaking when they leave us. My thoughts are with you.

Sorry to hear about your much loved dog.

Cherish every moment with her and please try not to let her see that you are sad; very difficult I know, but that's what I tried to do with Poppy; they pick up on your vibes so easily. Please give her a gentle hug from me xx

shes gone was PTS earlier this week.
she was fine untill a couple of days before she died when she started showing signs of pain and had trouble breathing.
I know weve done the right thing but it doesnt half hurt
03-10-2013 8:40 PM
It will hurt for a long time, but just remember that your beloved dog is no longer hurting, as a pet owner you have just committed the ultimate act of kindness for your pet. Eventually the pain will ease and you will be left with wonderful memories, and the knowledge that you did your very best right up to the end. Big hug to you

Oh I am so very sorry to hear that; it's brought it all back about Poppy as well, I was in tears the other night about her, as its only 7 weeks since she was put to sleep. I have been wondering how she was getting on; Poppy was the same at the end, had trouble breathing and just couldn't settle, so I knew I had to do right by her. She will have left a big gap in your life. Sending you a hug at this very sad time.

So sorry for your loss. We are going through a rough patch here as our new little rescue dog has also got tumors and problems with her liver. We are taking it day by day with her. But it is so sad as she is such a lovely dog and we have just gotten to know her and love her. Life can be down right cruel sometimes. 😞
