Nobody can ever find a pulse in my mum's right wrist.  The left wrist if fine but no-one can ever find a pulse in her right wrist.  I keep saying that I wasn't put together right in the mixer and definitely know why.

You sound like a real challenge Fiona! lol My veins tend to collaps when they try to take blood. I gave up being a donor because of this.

Re: fiona 3 vampires 0

I have terrible veins, and because of the number of blood tests there is a LOT of scar tissue to make things even more difficult.

Every doctor, nurse and phlebotomist struggles, both the hospital staff, the staff at the GP surgery, the community outreach team and the local health clinic.

If they need to put in a catheter for I.V. meds / fluids it is a major problem, even the anaethetists struggle, even using an ultrasound machine.

I actually have a PICC line - a very long catheter right in the vein with a double "port" at the surface. Makes taking blood dead easy, can even do it myself. The PICC line is changed about every six months. The red port is used for blood, the blue port is used for I.V. fluids. The specialist PICC nurses are absolutely brilliant, but very busy so it pays to look after the PICC line VERY carefully as it can be quite a wait to get a replacement put in if it is damaged.

I too an reluctant to let go of it, they usually have to take it out of my right arm as the left hand side veins have gone to ground!!

Re: fiona 3 vampires 0

I know when I was in hospital, I breathed a sigh when the Vampires came on the ward! They were the proper phlebotomy nurses ( have I spelt that right? If not blame a beer or three!) They seemed to be able to get blood straight away, as opposed to the normal nurses, who would have problems.

Re: fiona 3 vampires 0

I'm the same as Maggie, I used to regularly give blood with no problems ......... now at the first glimse of a needle my veins do a runner, I went for my routine bp & thyroid test a couple of weeks ago & sure enough as expected I ended up going up to the hosp for pathology to take the sample. Funnily enough they alway manage first time when warned  Smiley Embarassed

Re: fiona 3 vampires 0

The nurse at our surgery is very good at getting a drop that's enough for my thydoid test. I need to go next month. I do often bruise though.
