Well the diagnosis seems to be Vascular Dementia.
She is in Happy Land 75% of the time and the rest she has turned aggressive.
I really wish her mind would just go completely. Is that awful?.

:_| you are all saying sensible things but I seem to have a strange metabolism ! I've never been on a diet before and I think my body is shocked. It's not like I'm asking it to half it's size! It's only 10lb then I will let it do its own thing!
This is the BBC article about fasting, there was also a program (which I missed).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549
The reporter only did two days fasting a week and lost weight. So instead of eating fewer calories every day you eat the normal amount most days and drop the calories on the fasting days. The idea seems to be that we didn't evolve on three square meals a day and can quite easily miss meals if we have to.
21-11-2012 11:49 PM
Oh (((Mags))) I don't know what to say about your Mum. Have you been told what happens next?
21-11-2012 11:52 PM
Thinking about it, hubby does eat more. He always used to say I gave him too big a portion but he doesn't any more. The worst thing was he couldn't sleep for two or three nights after taking them. He's now on some tablets that he takes just once a day, four at a time. He's not allowed to eat two hours before and after them. He was like a child the first day, he wanted to eat his fruit pastilles and I had to tell him no! :^O
Well at least they've decided on a diagnosis Mags. Is there anything they can do about it?
I understand you wanting her mind to go completely. My mother in law had that type of thing and at first it worried her because she knew. As she got worse, it was better because she didn't realise anything was wrong with her. You look after yourself while she's being looked after. You'll still have a lot of running about to do and things to organise. Good luck Mags.xx.:-x

I am finding though that the steroids increase my appetite
I have no experience of the effect of steroids on people, but my vet often gave one of my cats steroid jabs when she needed to eat and wouldn't - they certainly worked.
I do hope your next lot of treatment isn't so hard on you.
21-11-2012 11:55 PM
At least you have a diagnosis Mags. Can they do anything to help?
22-11-2012 12:11 AM
I'm going to go now, although like Chicken Grandpa, sleep is something I'm not good at either any more, will read for a bit. So thank you for all your advice re the steroids.
The worst thing about those rough few days is that you don't know what's wrong. I was genuinely scared. It's not like the flu and you know you're going to get over it. It's all new, so the only positive thing I can say is if it happens again I will know what it is, hopefully.
Meantime, goodnight and I'll be thinking of you Mags X.
22-11-2012 12:16 AM
Goodnight RDW, hope you get some sleep.:-D
22-11-2012 12:25 AM
Aww RDW, sorry you are having a rough patch. You are one strong lady and I do think of you often :-x
Mags, so sorry about your Mum but at least you have a diagnosis now. My friends Dad has just been diagnosed with the same thing.
Gina, thinking of you too. What an awful time some folk are having on here.

Learning, push for a Vitamin B12 deficiency test if she hasn't had one already. It's very common in elderly people - I have an 87 year old aunt in Canada who is having injections for it. Your mum may have it, as well as the vascular part, and it doesn't help.
See this: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/guide/vitamin-b12-deficiency-symptoms-causes
"If the deficiency is not corrected, it can damage the nerve cells. If this happens, vitamin B12 deficiency effects may include:
tingling or numbness in fingers and toes
difficulty walking
mood changes or depression
memory loss, disorientation, and dementia"

Thanks for the advice.
Think once the damage is done it's irreversible.
They are just talking about care packages and respite care. She needs to be seen by the Psychiatric Ageing Team.
As far as I'm concerned, we lost her yesterday.
22-11-2012 6:24 AM
Just had latest Movember update from son, who is trying to cheer me up
22-11-2012 7:55 AM
We're dealing with care packages as well. Occ therapy are hoping she'll have a carer in to help her but she's refusing (says she's washed herself for 80 years so she can do it for a few more), she's finally agreed to a home help/cleaner, which she's refused before & to have Wiltshire Farm Meals delivered. I'vd told occ therapy not to push with the washing/ dressing bit or she'll get peed off & say 'stuff the lot'.

Sorry you're in a similar situation Gina.
Thinking of you too.
22-11-2012 10:36 AM
Thinking of you both. No fun getting old & ill is it.:-( (((Mums)))
22-11-2012 10:52 AM
Mags & Gina...I feel so sad for you both...I would imagine that you have a lot of hard work & difficult decisions ahead (((HUGS)))
RDW...stick in there my friend...we all know that strength that you possess :-x

Kids!!
Son just phoned to ask if we have a power cut, which we haven't. He said everywhere, as far as he can see is pitch black. He was downstairs, his daughter was upstairs and his first thought was she'd be frightened and perhaps fall down the stairs. He stumbled his way up as quickly as he could, but she was fine, playing on the lap top and hadn't even noticed the lights had gone out. He told her,
'All the lights have gone out look, look, everywhere's dark! There's no electricity!:O
She glanced up from her game and said, 'It's ok, it's probably a power cut. :|'
She's three!:^O

Who locked the door & left me stranded outside of FHG X-(

Lol @ CGs grandaughter :^O
Sad to hear about the poorly Mums 😞 I hope they are both as comforable as can be, I totally understand what you mean about losing your Mum yesterday Learning, I wish my MIL would completely lose her memory at times, its so upsetting to see them get so distressed & aggresive at times its likes watching at a stranger in your loved one's body 😞
Extra hug also sent to RDW & Merc .... you've both been in my thoughts :-x
also one for Stan & anyone else feeling a little low :-x
