Hi (again)

Hi. Not been around for a while.
Trying to sell my house in London, and move up to Scotland, to be near my daughter.
I've got a buyer for my flat and I've found my perfect house. But the frustrating part is now getting everything to move quickly.
I can't put in an offer on the house I want until I've completed the sale of my flat. The laws in Scotland are different to English ones, when it comes to house buying.

Re: Hi (again)

I know that the offer is legally binding in Scotland, but when we moved up here our offer was made subject to completion of the sale down south. That meant that if our house in England didn't sell then the contract up here was void. Well worth talking to a solicitor if you have found the house you want. Where in Scotland are you going?

Nice to have you back Goldcrest.  I hope that you get things sorted soon.

Re: Hi (again)

I had no idea you could make an offer, subject to your completion! You'd have thought TWO solicitors and the estate agent would have told me that! I will ring the solicitors, first thing tomorrow.
I'm moving to Callander btw. My daughter already lives there but will be moving in with me, to minimise living costs.

Re: Hi (again)

House buying can be very different in Scotland as the prices are usually " offers over " and in some areas that can be quite a lot in percentage terms ...although some houses do have fixed prices.

However we did live in Scotland for a while and bought and sold our house there . To be truthful it was not really much different for us as we had already sold our house in England before moving there.

Probably the biggest difference in Scotland is that when people in Scotland buy or sell houses they do so with intent ....you are not usually messed around by people making offers then withdrawing .....

Its a beautiful place ...but in our case it was to far from our family so we moved back over the border but can be at Gretna in 30 mins and love going back to Edinburgh .....

Re: Hi (again)

Thank you B&B.
The town I'm moving to, Callander. In the 60's was known as Tannoch Brae. As it was the location used for the original series of Dr. Finlay's casebook.

Re: Hi (again)

Yes. The house I'm interested in was 'offers over' originally. But then it was given a reduced 'fixed price'. Too good to miss.
We have registered 'notes of interest' which we were advised to do, by the seller. I've no idea how useful that will be.

Re: Hi (again)

In Scotland, if you register a note of interest, the selling solicitors are duty bound to tell you if there any other offers made on the property from the date your interest was noted.

Re: Hi (again)

OK! I have done the deed. That is, I have asked the solicitor to put in an offer for the house, subject to my sale going through. Just have to wait and see now.

Re: Hi (again)

Thank you. It's actually a 3 bedroom G/F flat with it's own front and back entrances. And a secluded private garden. Just perfect for us, and the dog.

Re: Hi (again)

You're right Rose.  Moving is stressful.  We moved twice in about two and a half years.  When we moved to the bungalow where we live now, we had problems with the couple at the top of the chain and also, the couple who were buying our property.  We said that we would by the bungalow in August 2001 and we finally moved in in April 2002.  The only way I'll move now is in a wooden overcoat.

Re: Hi (again)

As promised, I'm back with an update. I'm sure you were all waiting, with baited breath!
Anyway. I have been in my new house in Callander, for a month now.. And we are still unpacking!
So thankful for no more drives from/to London anymore. We are also slowly emptying my daughters flat, as she is now living with me.
Don't suppose I shall ever return to Englandshire again.

Re: Hi (again)

goldcrest, welcome to Scotland and may your years in your new house never see a problem at your door.

You will find it a totally different pace of life compared to London and the farther North you venture even more laid back.
