Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Deno (proper name De Novo) was adopted by FHG posters in 2005 when one of them, Shebalator, rescued him from slaughter.

Then - 700lbs underweight with a broken jaw and multiple other ills.

Photobucket

2008 - still struggling with sarcoids but finally fit enough to have a light rider up for the first time so he could
join his mates on a jaunt round the local lanes

Photobucket

2009 - due to sheb’s declining health, a new home was sought for Deno.
A very brave ebayer named upthecreekyetagain ( very apt name I think you will agree) agreed to take him on.
So, now Deno lives in Surrey with the Creeky family, plus 3 lovely mares. He has 5 acres of grass and orchards to roam in and is very happy.

Photobucket

His sarcoids still remain a problem, but a new vet is investigating them further to decide on the best course of palliative care.
Visits can be arranged, please contact Creeky for more info.

Deno is reliant on fundraising and donations for his food, medicines and all the things that make his world that bit nicer.

His in-depth story can be found on his website http://www.denorescuedhorse.co.uk/
and there is more info (including how you can join in and help him) on Elphaba’s Me Page.

This replaces his previous diary thread that had become too cumbersome to load.
And to mark the start of the next chapter of his life.

New Deno supporters always welcome!

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Just checked the great lummox - seems fine, bored and hungry - I don't think I'm his best friend at the moment :^O

Will go down at first light and hopefully he'll be OK and ready for breakfast 😄

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

as a owner of a group supporting deno i would like to give my take on this discussion.

some of you will know that i have a group called loonys and have had for years,  (ever since groups were for started on ebay )

The group has been off ebay for well over a year and its the best move i ever made for a variety of reasons.

My group was specially set up because of monkey world and the owners asking me not to sell on ebay auctions to raise funds because of ebays reputation.

When i found fhg and saw the thread about deno we started  to raise funds for him once a year with an event that was different and sent the money on to goth.

couple of years ago i set up a charity account and it was decided that any money raised at our once yearly event  would be used by frank for either posh or deno.  it was in essence an emergency fund.   Goth is a sig holder on that bank account.

We also have our own paypal account.

This of course was never meant to replace this thread nor undermine the deno supporters who were raising money long before i arrived on this thread.

The group also fund raised and still does for other charities and good causes.

We have a dedicated thread for posh which isnt posted on very often and deno, lulu and the welsh`s get an occasional mention as well.

Yes there are things discused that should not be put in public as its often personal family stuff.  Loonys is a family group and most members feel secure and able to post personal and private things in a group that is not public.

There is never and has`t been anything agreed/decisions  about deno discussed in the group apart from when cuddles died and a new girlfriend was urgently needed for deno.

Frank will sometimes add a post in there that he has posted on here if its news on deno and posh.

A group also means that those not able to come here can also feel involved.

This thread is important and could never replace any group for a number of reasons.

I really hope that people dont think frank only posts in groups with news because he doesnt.   From the experiences in my group he actually posts less news than you get here.:_|

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

The old feller is fine.

Let out of the stable - warm breakfast made with hot water.

Quickly demolished - wasn't so keen on us sprinling salt over he yard though.

Ice broken on the water troughs - boiling water added to them to bring the temperature up a bit from the -7 recorded on the thermometer.

They've got a haynet each - will go down later to check them and give them some more hay - don't want him stuffing his face all in one go 😞

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Thanks Liz

The Welsh gits have had a warm breakfast, warm water and a fresh bale of hay - one of the big round ones.

The dogs and cats have been fed.

Now for a cup of coffee, slice of toast and an attempt to defrost my feet!

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

He's getting his chops around something at the moment  😄

I checked him before going to bed last night and he was the very picture of outraged concern for his empty stomach :^O

There was a couple of deeply touching moments when Posh and he touched noses with such affection.  It made me quite well up :-x

Moz's mob have been absolutely brilliant, proper loonies :^O

Seriously though Jen is right, I don't post anymore often over there than I do here.

Back to the horses, not risen above freezing all day, -4 at 3pm 😮

Checked Deno a couple of times today, he's fine - just been down and removed ice from the troughs and topped up with warm water, fed and hay nets hung up - have switched the stable lights off so he can have a good sleep so you won't see much on the stable cam but there is enough light to see a little bit on the yard cam

Warming up before going to feed and water the Welsh Gits.

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

Aaaargh Creeky!

On the upside, the mud has frozen solid 😄

Deno doesn't seem bothered, I have to say, as long as he has a nice warm haynet to stick his face in.

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

You're right about the mud Elp but it was this that caused a lot of Deno's problems last winter.

He's heavy enough to go through the mud and because he doesn't pick his feet up when he walks he can cut the front of his legs on the icy surface.

It took us until about March last year before these healed and the infection was finally got rid of.

We have bought him boots to prevent this but I can't find them :_|

Still Sam is home onight, hopefully she knows where they are.

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

frank  maybe time to consider my suggestion of a thingy that you put in ponds to stop it freezing over.   can i also suggest that you dont put your hands in the water to try and break it up.  😛

one thing i used to do with the fish pond is sprinkle a very small amount of salt on the ice and wait for it to start cracking so it was easy to break up.  not sure whether you an do that with horses water though.    though you could scoop out the solid bits but not with your hands

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

a friend used a  couple  hard rubber balls to stop freezing on his pond, it might not work with horses though   lol

Re: Deno's Diary Part 3, A new Chapter

This is a horse that can cut himself on mud.  Rubber balls in his drinking water can only lead to one outcome and it would probably involve Creeky up to his shoulder in Deno from one direction or another :_|

As it is, his new boots probably ought to be duct taped on him .........    I still think full body bubblewrap is the only way to go
