Errr... i was referring to the state of preservation of the platform and to the obviously non-vintage structure on the right of the image.

Ah, I see..... it's actually due to that part being kinda fenced off, technically can still get to it if you go down to the path from the main road via the hole in the fence!

Would you say it has been worked on, though?  I can't see those flat concrete(?) panels on the vertical side below platform level beding original.  That would imply the scrapyard has carried out some degree of work on it?

No that's from when the station was last officially worked on when it was an working station, it's how they did things for a while when they stopped making them fully out of brick and stone. It's the same at Cadishead and West Timperley to name but a few, lots of later station platforms were done in this way.

Here's a pic of Cadishead:

Ah... a case of them spending £££ on something they wanted to close just to skew the business case by inflating the costs...?  They did a lot of that sort of thing in those days didn't they?

I don't know why a line appeared in that post!

Possibly the case, but looks more like they were doing these stations on the cheap, as it was easier and quicker to construct the platforms using the concrete method, thus costing less to do!

At least the line wasn't blue!

Would there have been some significance if the line was blue, then?  Or are you just worried about getting your collar felt...?

Nahhh, plus if somebody peeks inside my car, the NR log book in the back will throw them off the scent.

Incidentally, I did go back to CJS this Sunday, mainly to spray a little waterproofing on the metal components still languishing around, along with some clearing of fallen dead branches and getting rid of some brambles! Though next weekend, I may do Staley & Millbrook, Micklehurst, Friezland, Upper Mill and Diggle railway stations, along with a lot of the line!

Yes, I'll have to make it a really early start, get out and about for around about 9am, otherwise I'll lose too much daylight, plus there's a few other things I want to have a look at long the line, such as the tunnel entrance from the current line at Stalybridge that goes onto the disused line. If you look at this pic below, you can see the opening in the green bit just above.... obviously I'm not* going to go down into it, but I do want to get a few snaps from above.... though I may lower my camera and see if that'll work!

I see it; branching off to the right of the existing line - near the large white house?

Where is the other end of the tunnel?  I've had a look on Maps myself but it's so heavily overgrown and with so much new building having taken place... it's difficult to get any idea at all!

If you go to the map and look by the river, you can see a footbridge going across, that marks the line that the viaduct took over the river, I've circled the barely visible brickwork sticking out of the 3D Maps pic:

Ah!  I was looking for something much longer like the one that's still in use...  No wonder I missed it.

About half the length of the current active line tunnel. Though I have to say, the inside of this tunnel ain't half bad!

Yes, except for the obvious lack of track... that's remarkably good condition.  Has it had any use at all for anything in the interim?

It doesn't appeared to have been used or even interfered with, apart from street level, where it looks like a lot of soil and junk has been dumped down, as you could actually now just hop over the wall by the main street and not have a long drop down. I may just buy myself a collapsible rope ladder, go back down to the wall up entrance and go inside!

Though before that, I got wind of some disturbing news, Manchester Council are planning on widening Hyde Road in Gorton and one of the things that is to be destroyed in order to make way for the widening, is the site of Hyde Road Railway Station (along with the original rail bridge), the one I showed the buried underground chamber of the station! So this Sunday (as my car goes in for MOT retesting on Saturday), I will be heading down there again, but I will be photographing and video recording ever single detail about the site, as I don't want to see it go forgotten!

Yikes!  Is there a timescale on that plan of theirs to counter-productivdely attract more traffic to the area?

I've no idea at present, the news article was in September and there doesn't seem to have been any news since, but you have touched on the same thing that a local was quoted as saying, that people who normally miss out going through that area, may now be inclined to travel down there, meaning the widening of the road being worthless! So sadly I have no idea if any plans have been finalised or any work having been done, I've Tweeted the question to Manchester City Counil to no responce! I'll be spending at least 4 hours there on Sunday, making sure every little detail is documented, I want to make sure the place has some recorded recent history!

On a more up to date note, I tried one of the new TPE trains today from York to Leeds, one of the class 68 sets.  Wondering if you've seen any of them - or any of their other two new types - yet as they do go through Manchester?
