What's with all these ridiculous new "badges"?

Is it just me, or are others insulted by the infantilisation of this board, and being awarded badges, for "being helpful", or whatever?

I'm a grown up, not a child. I don't need badges so others can see how helpful I am.

My 3 year old granddaughter get awarded badges at nursery school, for acheiving things like washing her hands, brushing her teeth, being nice to her little sister etc., and quite honestly, it feels like I'm seen by ebay, as having about the same mental age as her!

We're all adults here; I just wish eBay would treat us as such.

Over promise, then under deliver = negative buyer experience, INR cases, unhappy buyers and sellers.
Under promise, then over deliver = Positive buyer experience, joy and happiness all round.
If only eBay could get their heads round this basic concept, this would be a happier place for all.

Re: What's with all these ridiculous new "badges"?

Ebay cracks down on selling knives.  Quite right too.  I had an auction of a cake knife pulled, just imagine the carnage in the playground, a bunch of teens threatening each other with cake knives.

Can we have badges for "most ridiculous reasons for being banned"?

If the forums here get too stupid, we could always move to the ebayuk subreddit.

Can be threatened with a cake knife.

Can be threatened with a fist too - but we don't ban people having working hands.

Try selling working hands on ebay, or any other body parts.  I think you'd get banned pretty quickly.

Good Morning all,

We will be running two more badge types after today's badges. They will be Thursday and next Tuesday.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: What's with all these ridiculous new "badges"?

That sounds like a badge being given just because it's a certain day of the week 🙂

I've been getting badges. They have no influence on whether I post. I'm not especially for or against them, but would appreciate the option of disabling them - is that possible please?

Hi @insidethe93,

Thank you for your question.

This is not possible as the badges are linked to having a community account. It seems like a lot at the moment since we are backdating badges. You'll receive multiple in some cases as you may have earned them a long time ago. Once these three days are over the badges will be live and will only be sent to an account once earned.

Thanks,

Katie

Two important alerts on my tablet this morning, and guess what? Two more ridiculous badges! I'm off to see my 3 year old granddaughter today - she'll be SO jealous 😉

katie@ebay lots of responses while you've been away, but not a single positive one amongst them; time to have a rethink, and ditch this daft idea?

Over promise, then under deliver = negative buyer experience, INR cases, unhappy buyers and sellers.

Re: What's with all these ridiculous new "badges"?

I can’t imagine how much time resource and money has been spent on this.

If management consider spending this outlay on badges is the priority over directing the time and effort to fixing long- and short-standing glitches, then it really is time to abandon all hope.

If this is the height of today's management thinking, we’re doomed, we’re all doomed!

Hi all,

As mentioned before badges were first introduced in 2020. We have added no additional resources.

These are also community site resources and have no impact on the main site. These actions are done by our team here on the community. We work solely on the community and have no impact on resources for the main ebay.co.uk site.

Thanks,

Katie

"we’re doomed, we’re all doomed!"

A direct quote from private Fraser.

Question - if these badges are so important [they are being back dated] why were they not awarded at the time?

Re: What's with all these ridiculous new "badges"?

Today I’ve 'earned' badges for 1, 50, 100, and 250 'helpfuls' in the space of two hours, all without having a single post marke£ as helpful since yesterday.

It's strangely comforting to know that all eBay systems are glitchy, not use the useful ones. 😁

In my forum profile menu under subscriptions and bookmarks is notification settings. It turns out there's a section for "badges I have earned". It has a dropdown menu, allegedly for how often I get notified about these badges. Mine is already set to never but I think it's only for the emails. I don't think I can stop only the badge push notifications (that bell thing in the top corner) without turning them all off.

Plus have you noticed this thread has been reassigned to the cafe where it's less visible.🤔
