I see others have already asked this question (“I do not have a credit card, is there any other way to prove my age to eBay?”), but received little relevant response, with all manner of ‘real world’ suggestions (from joining porn sites, to showing your driving license!), none of which relate to the exclusive eBay setup.
I can only assume the answer to be ‘No’.
so much for living in an ‘inclusive’ world.

There are plenty of ways to prove your age that are legally acceptable when buying age-restricted items. However e-Bay will only accept possession of a credit card, presumably because that is simple and therefore cheap. Any business can conduct itself as it sees fits, within the law.
The answer is very simple: take your business elsewhere.

I’m not sure what other responses you are seeing.the only response I’ve ever seen is the correct one.
eBay only accept a valid credit card on file. That’s it.if you don’t have one, you can prove your age for eBay.

I totally understand that there has to be some kind of age restriction, but it's pretty obvious I am over 18 when I have been a member of ebay for 20+ years. I do not have a credit card by choice, therefore can not verify my age. So annoying and frustrating when trying to buy certain products. Thank goodness for Amazon, where I can still get basic items from that ebay deem to be under an age restriction policy

While ebays are applying excessive limitations (applying the rules to products they do not need to and only accepting a credit card on file as proof of age) its worth noting that having a 20 year ebay account would not class as due diligence either under the law.
Realistically - they should allow upload of a form of government issued ID (ie passport or driving licence)

When I bought craft scissors, I had to upload both sides of my driving licence. (Not Ebay)
Personally, I would much rather have to pay through Ebay checkout using my credit card than upload ID with my photo, full name, DoB, address and signature for some random seller on Ebay to see.

And to cap it all off - scissors shouldn't be age restricted anyway, where ever you buy them from.

They came in a great big box with red 'age restricted' labels.
The neighbours probably thought I had bought a zombie knife!

Well it does really, in those days you would have had a PayPal account and you have to be over 18 for that! Besides, does this mean you only 18 year olds and under are the only ones to stab people?
13-08-2025 6:28 PM
Exactly!
The moment you turn 18, you give up crime and become a model citizen.

Besides, does this mean you only 18 year olds and under are the only ones to stab people?
Are you suggesting under 18s should be allowed to by knives then? Or perhaps set the age at say 80?
13-08-2025 6:34 PM
Unbelievable! Who do these people think they are?
The contents of your post is nobody else’s business. Broadcasting the implication that you are some kind of danger to the public, or perhaps a pervert, to everyone who sees your mail, en route, is not acceptable.

Bottomline --- Sorry, only a ( monthly statement ) Credit Card to confirm your age is acceptable to eBay --- nothing else will do !! --- an everyday use Debit Card will not be accepted.

Some of you seem to have the wrong idea of what I was saying, I totally agree that there has to be some sort of control, how I don't know. My point was that I choose not to have a credit card, therefore ebay should have other options available, rather than dictate to me

If you've had an Ebay account for 20 years it certainly DOES prove you are over 18 years old. It's technically impossible for you to be any younger than that.
We're increasingly being nudged towards a brave new digital stupidity. Maybe maths is not their strong suit but even the most zealous zealots can do those sums?

I would suggest you need to understand what the law says around age verification.
It is entirely plausible that the law would not see a 20 year old ebay account as 'proof of age'. The requirement is showing 'due diligence'
For example a 16 year old could be using their parents' ebay account.
