I'm 53, disabled, no C.C. to verify age and likely wouldn't qualify for one. Had Ebay account 22yrs.

Hi all, as per title, I'm 53, I'm disabled and on disability benefits so I likely wouldn't qualify for a credit card even if I wanted one as I'm not working.

I've had an Ebay account since 2003.

I now can't buy any bladed tools due to some new U.K. legislation enforced in recent months.

This is beyond absurd and discriminatory!

Has anyone complained to their local MP about this?

Cheers!

Tom.

Ebay got back to me again, a Birth Certificate and utility bill is not enough to prove my age, ONLY a Credit Card will do.

Once again they suggest I ask 'friends or family' with a C.C. to help me purchase some tools.

Pathetic, demeaning and discriminatory.

How can a Birth Certificate not be acceptable as proof of age? It's like an expired passport. DOB doesn't change over time.

Ah well, you don't have to be mad to use Ebay. But, as one of the mentors will no doubt confirm, it would help if you were.

Presumably their primary 'reason' for demanding a credit card could be in case they need to deduct money from it, some day in future? It's practically impossible to deduct money from a birth certificate.

Maybe because a birth certificate does not have a photo so has no proof of who you are and it is easy to obtain copies of birth certificates. An expired passport has a photo.

Neither does a credit card. Besides, even if a birth certificate had a photo you probably won't look much like you did when you were 3 weeks old?

And even if you had 5 copies of yours I can assure you the date of birth would be the same on ALL of them.

The credit card you are logging though is separate from the payment itself. This is stated as such on the help page…

We support age verification for many items, confirming the buyer’s age through credit card information, which is used for age verification purposes only, and won’t be charged or saved, or through our third party partner VerifyMyAge.

they make reference though to verifymyage though which does offer alternative options for age verification…but generally services that do an ID scan are a per verification cost, while credit card checks are normally part of a fixed monthly fee. So the reason is likely cost for eBay.

It sounds like a roundabout way of verifying someone's age. I'm assuming VerifyMyAge has a database of people (with names, addresses and dates of birth) as well as their credit card info, while Ebay's user data also includes name, address and date of birth.

You'd think that all that's needed is for Ebay to confirm from their age verification supplier that the person Ebay *knows* to be over 18 on their database matches with one also *known* to be over 18 on the supplier's database? This could be a seamless background check requiring no input from the buyer.

Asking for spurious details like a credit card that doesn't exist seems to be setting up verification to fail, especially with no back-up check in place. Like a phone helpline with 2 menu options, neither of which is 'talk to an operator'.

I guess that as long as customers like Ebay are happy to keep paying for what is at best a partial/incomplete service there's no reason for them to change it?

Hi all, the issue has been brought to the attention of my local MP and is being looked into by one of his case-workers.

Hopefully he can then bring it to the attention of U.K. Government so they can fix this ill-thought out Legislation.

I'll keep you posted!

Tom.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

Ebay using a credit card as proof of age for the purchase of bladed items is their way of complying with the legislation that forbids the sale of bladed items to under 18s.  Surely you haven't asked your MP to attempt to remove the actual legislation?

As per the original post. There is no credit card to verify, causing 'verification' to fall on its face.

My appeal to Ebay has fallen on deaf ears, namely, I got fobbed off onto some 3rd party support who are super-nice but can't actually do anything to remedy the situation.

As U.K. Legislation is the root cause, yes I've asked my MP to look into it.

Re: I'm 53, disabled, no C.C. to verify age and likely wouldn't qualify for one. Had Ebay account 22

Speaking for myself I wouldn't want to give my driving licence birth certificate info to a mere online shop, as it contains info an identity thief would love to have, and over the period of years or even forever it takes only one mistake with my info or careless handling or one rogue employee or a good hacker.

In particular, just for an online shop, I wouldn't want to send copies of those valuable documents in the form of scans. "I enclose a copy of my birth certificate and driving licence," says an ID-thief pretending to be you. Those two are two of the most useful documents for an ID-thief.

When I (three times) had power of attorney, despite instructions to send certified copies of certain documents, I sent out redacted photocopies of a certified copy of my relatives'  documents like birth certificate, bank statements and Lasting Power off Attorney (which contains, for instance, mother's maiden name, full names/addresses/D.O.B./job info/contact info of attorneys and other relevant parties - real gifts to an ID-thief). I told the recipients to obtain a "proper" certified copy at their own expense (none did) and no one raised queries or mentioned the redactions. Just because important organisations e.g. statutory undertakers or government agencies demand certain things doesn't mean you have to comply, as privacy and security for you or someone you act for are more important (you can always send an unredacted copy later if they insist). eBay gets away with being so demanding because, bottom line, do you want to buy/sell on eBay or not? so it means deciding one's priorities. Are you really so constrained that you must give unredacted personal info just to buy or sell a particular item on this particular platform or go and obtain it in a physical shop or have someone pick it up for you?

When an Ebay employee said a birth certificate was acceptable as id etc ...they also said that the name on the certificate and Ebay account must match.    For most women this will not be the case as was pointed out at the time.

In that case it would have to be birth certificate + marriage certificate, covering both DOB and change of name.

My point about an Age Verification system is that, while it may have records of credit cards, the DOB itself is clearly an attribute of the card holder. If VerifyMyAge has records of personal details then it shouldn't need a valid credit card to verify anybody's age.

Unless this is the 'full ID check' which Ebay can't afford or is reluctant to pay for?
