Bidding

There were bids no higher than £12 for a ring. So I put in my highest and a random bid of £20.63. That was EXACTLY what was accepted as the bid above the lower amount! Surely the bid below mine hadn't suddenly crept up to £20.62. A penny lower than my bid.

Your winning bid took you one step higher than the previous highest. You can look up how bidding works on eBay's help, but here it is anyway:

So, if the highest bid below yours was £20 then your bid of £20.63 would win, just as it would have done if the other bid had been £20.01, £20.50 or £20.62.

You should read the help to be confident in your bidding.

A bidder puts in their maximum bid but only enough is used to beat the previous bidder. The rest is used automaticaly each time somebody else bids. You were lucky enough to find the previous bidders highest bid straight away and beat them.
