I have a frequent buyer of assorted colours of zips and each time they make a purchase, i message them for their colour mix requirements
It appears the message facility for this particular buyer is not working, i keep getting the message "

Have you tried sending a direct message via the buyers profile rather than through the order system?

Yes, i tried both, i even began to email them using the email address on click and drop which is brought over from ebay (the coded ebay email address) but i thought better of it fearing i might be closed down for messaging outside ebay.
I dont know what else to do

You can use the Ebay e mail address once a purchase has been made without any repercussions.
It's worth a try.
Have you called CS?

Has the customer a phone number on their account. You could then ask for an email address and use that in future. Not your fault if the ebay system is not working.

As @railwayscenics says, for an Order already placed you can find the Buyer's direct telephone and email here:
View Order Details > under Order it says the Buyer's name use dropdown beneath that to Show Contact Info
For an order not yet placed, add to the description for Buyers to add a Note with colours/shades desired.
