Tech support says :messages to upgrade from a private to business account have been sent by mistake

I had a message yesterday on my private selling account and an email, to say that I needed to upgrade from a private seller to a business account, I called eBay this morning to ask about various things with regards to upgrading to a business account and the tech support person said....No need to, the emails have all been sent out by mistake.

I asked will I receive an email to confirm it was a mistake, they said no, but they are currently working on the issue.

The tech support person did say, if I received a 2nd email to say I needed to upgrade to a business account, then it would be best to call back and confirm if I do need to upgrade, but the 1st email as been sent out to many, many private sellers and they have no need to upgrade to a business account.

I hope you do not get caught up in it all -  your listings and sales do not point to a business on ebay - sometimes I feel some members look at your overall sales for the last 24 years and your feedback total score rather than your recent sales and feedback - which seem to be what anyone would expect from personal sales  - yes you will fall into the reporting criteria for HMRC but that does not make you a business on ebay

Of course they are.

1) Not every private seller got the message.

2) In a C&P I saw somewhere on the boards, the 'restrictions' that 'may' happen started off very mildly, and it would probably be a long time before the account holder was forced to register/had their account closed.

I do feel a bit sorry for those waiting with their popcorn today for all the threads that are probably not going to happen!

Don't forget, at the end of the day is this is all about making money for ebay, NOT about them addressing the issue of unregistered business sellers, which is something they could do easily in many other ways.

They will make more money if sellers either fork out for a few extra 35p listings, or if the sellers with the larger inventories  pay £19.99 for a shop with 1,000 listings (plus their 300 which can roll over each month at no extra charge). Ebay don't want to lose these sellers/sales, they just want to make a bit of money out of them.

The same with the higher International fee for private sellers. It makes no difference to the exchange rate any form of extra charge whether the seller is business or private, but charging private sellers a higher percentage is just a way to get a little more in fees.

"I do feel a bit sorry for those waiting with their popcorn today"

It's you who takes issue over this and has made several sarcastic digs towards those that it really affects. If people have an issue with it (which they do) and you don't agree with it or the way it's being spoken about, just ignore it. Move on and the like. No point having subtle digs at other members because of the way they feel over it.

Oh and the cliche classic in the other post:

"but over the last few days there has been such nastiness, that there are now a lot of business sellers I wouldn't buy from either"

You've been here long enough and would be aware of members like myself for a while. Had you any intention of buying from us, you'd have done so by now.

It's funny that though. I've seen it all before. Some company says something in a tweet some people don't like. Out comes the shouts to boycott, 'I'm never going there again' said Billy (who has never been there anyway). 'i'll vote with my feet' says Jane the lifelong vegetarian about a fried chicken shop they've never been to.

You see, it's very easy for someone to vote with their feet, but actually, in most cases it doesn't mean diddly squat, especially when you've never shopped there before even after being long aware of members like myself. Indicating you probably never would and that's no loss then.

Its gone on mine too.  I'm hoping its good news, but it may just be that the deadline to convert and get  incentives they were offering has passed.   I think the real test is midnight tonight to see if restrictions are put in place and on Friday to see if the 80% off fees offer returns.

Yes, let us know, I upgraded my account to a business account, hopefully they will not force you to upgrade and hopefully it is not just the message that has disappeared.

That is good news, the real test would be to list or relist an item, to see if a message shows up about becoming a business account, before anymore listings can go live.

My apologies to the good folk of this board, this is really a direct response to  btr.style.  Do feel free to just move on to the next post!

Right, after the way you spoke to me last time, I did vow not to bother to rise to the bait, but I will just clear up a few points before I ignore you completely.

I ran 2 businesses on here for many years. One of them (books) more or less collapsed when the book mega-listers came on the scene, they were and still are selling books for less than it would cost me to post them. So I had to ditch things like novels, more common kids books and switch to lots. The other was knitting patterns - low value but  fast turnover. Then the unreg business sellers moved in with their illegal copies. Yes, I moaned on here, tried to get something done about it for many years, but to no avail. Then ebay upped the business seller fee for crafts to an unworkable amount - especially as the whole of the first page of best match for 'vintage knitting patterns' was full of illegal copies by mainly 'private' sellers. So I closed the business and dumped massive amounts of patterns in the recycle bin.

So, yes, I know the effect of unreg business sellers. But whilst I moaned, I was never nasty, I never treated people as if they are stupid because they didn't happn to have the same viewpoint.
On here, sadly, ebay owe you nothing. They do things that are harmful to your business, or don't do things that would considerably improve your business. You just have to make the decision, put up and adapt or move on.

As for which sellers I buy from - I buy very little, but apart from food shopping, most of the stuff I buy, I buy on here.  As for:

"You've been here long enough and would be aware of members like myself for a while. Had you any intention of buying from us, you'd have done so by now. "

Why would I have bought from you by now? I haven't really been aware of your for that long - and even if I was aware of you from your posts, I had no idea what you sold.  I don't make a point of trying to buy from every seller on the boards/site.

Strangely, the item that I picked at random of yours to use as an example in a previous post (and this was the first time I had looked at your items, as far as I am aware) happened to be an M&S grey hoodie in my size. I liked it, it was a good price and I did nearly hit the buy button. But because you were so rude to me, I thought I would just stick to the seller I normally use for clothes.
Obviously there are sellers that are on my blocked seller saved search that I probably never will buy from anyway - never going to buy dvds, games, ornaments etc etc, but I don't usually look to see what they sell. I just see 'attitude' and add them to the excluded on my saved search.

Also in clipping the quote to just contain the bit about not buying from certain business sellers you purposely left of the bit about me never buying from unreg businesses - something that I haven't knowingly done for years. I think most regular posters on here would agree that I fully back the gripe business sellers have about unreg business sellers. What I do have an issue with is people who are rude and or unpleasant.

The upgrade or face restrictions warning banner has returned again. They have just changed the deadline date to the 9th September.

That is frustrating, keep us posted, I think an interesting test will be Friday with the 80 percent off fee offer, see if that comes in for you, perhaps the warning message to upgrade to a business acount might stay, but not actually affect your selling, and perhaps just become an annoying message.

Please keep us updated, I am definetly interested.

Hopefully the message will just be "reminder message" that does not limit your selling ability on the site, hopefully it will be fine just to ignore it, perhaps next week the message will change from the 9th to the 15th, then later and later...with no real affect.

I didnt get the 80% offer last time and the warning banner was active then.  Prior to that, I was email messaged to get the offer every 2 weeks.

So I'm now in a kind of Purgatory, as I cant appeal it until the restrictions hit, but also wont get the fees offer that makes selling worthwhile either as the warning banner is active.

Spoke to CS in Ireland. It's being done in batches of several thousand accounts at a time. Sellers who have a private account for genuine personal items, and who also have private accounts used for business purposes (which are being flagged to upgrade), are being told they must upgrade their genuine private account as well. One agent agreed it made no sense, and the two shouldn't be mixed up. They couldn't offer any further advice, other than to say they had been bombarded with calls (angry) with this & other issues relating to the changes. The second (who was clearly more knowledge about the changes) said that it was solely eBay's decision, and if you are a business seller using eBay's platform, with a business account, they no longer make any distinction between business / private sales for that business / person, hence all accounts linked to that business / person must be business accounts on their platform. Make of that what you will.

I know I've said it on this thread before but please dont 100% believe anything CS tell you, your general agent will have less knowledge than people on here as they will not be told anything. Theres no reason for eBay to tell Steven in Dublin the details but not tell the actual users of the site. Obviously eBay are terrible at communication to customers (sellers) but they are always internally too. CS tell you what you want to hear, I could phone up now and they will tell me a different story, I wish I had no confidence in eBay cs but after 14 years and hundreds of phone calls history repeats itself.

Without going into details, this was not your lower tier CS agent. He was much higher up in the ranks, dealing with a specific issue. He was very much more knowledgeable about the changes, and eBay's reasoning behind them. I've spoken to many a CS agent in my time, and many, like the first I spoke to, are so unknowledgable it's scary.
