Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

Well! There I was, on my sniping account (private not business), happily combining and paying for a few purchases, when I noticed that when I leave feedback for some items (not all items interestingly), the top tab then turns to 'resell'.  This doesn't happen on my business account which stays as 'view similar items'.

When I clicked on 'resell' all of the item specifics are filled in.  The photos are not. Although they are very easy to simply go and copy from the original listing of course.

What's going on now? Is it to try and reduce returns? Get the buyers to resell instead? Be nice... can't see it working. Is it to encourage selling? eBay must be able to see I buy a lot on that account. Is it thinking I sell on a different online site?

Curiouser and curiouser... all thoughts welcome x

Really, so your saying that by law I need to inform the books/jigsaw sellers before I purchase from them that I'm a business? What a joke, doubt if it would make any difference to them.

Anyway, I didn't think you were selling on here anymore just ebid.

'Most (not all) of the complaints I have seen on the boards from sellers relate to eBay's Global Shipping Programme. Typically an item that Pitney Bowes deemed to be "restricted" isn't forwarded on - the buyer is refunded and the seller is not held liable for refunding them. The exact same item is then listed by a private seller who presumably purchased a job lot of such items from PB (or someone working on their behalf) - their listing using the exact same images and description that the original seller used. Admittedly I haven't seen one of these threads for a while but that's probably because any thread that receives no replies for 6 months or so is now "archived" meaning it effectively vanishes into the ether. '

I seem to be missing the point you are making in this example.

Restricted items, sold by a business or private seller, are in effect being 'bought' by Ebay with no loss to the buyer or seller. They then sell these, legitimately as per their T&C's, we believe through an auction. Items are bought by, who knows, a registered business or a private seller looking to make a profit.

The only thing wrong with this is if they are being sold on a private account.

The point was the item(s) were resold via private accounts (possibly the same one; I can't remember). Not only that but they were relisted using the exact same images and descriptions as the original listings which appeared to have been copied verbatim. These weren't brand new mass-produced items with stock images; they were used/collectible items. eBay is apparently unable to detect this violation of their own written policy even though in this example it should have been easy enough for them to do.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Re: Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

Thanks for all your posts folks, especially @4_bathrooms for quoting what ebay's policies and the legalities are on the matter.

I hope the thread will give some business sellers something to think about, perhaps even putting their houses in order and trading legally.

My apologies to @sheba-knows-best for high-jacking your thread.

Re: Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

I wouldn't really call it selling as I've only had 5 transactions since January, sold more to local people. Don't sell on ebay but am buying as I can't find what I want elsewhere.

If it wasn't for the fact I would only receive some unhelpful answer I would question the point of the resell button in the community chat today.

Re: Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

Its a TARP!

Resell = Business.

Its that simple.

This smacks of .GOV directive. If you "Resell" you are a business in "Their" eyes and shouldbe treated as such.

Tax Tax Tax............

Re: Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

I don't think so when I can remember 'Sell this item' being shown on my private account Purchase History page back in 2012 (see reply # 13).  Long before the furore on ebay or HMRC being concerned by businesses operating on private accounts.

I also checked my current Purchase History page (still a private account) which goes back to September 2020 and that also has 'Sell This Item' on the 'Other Actions'  drop down menu for all purchases, although I don't know if, when, or how often it's been updated.

As I said earlier, I didn't realise it had ever been removed or when if it ever was.

My guess would be that ebay is just trying to get two lots of fees rather than any other reason for putting it on purchases.

Re: Resell? What's the thinking behind this then?

Legalese.

Its the wording.  "Sell This Item" is not the same as "Resell".

Its a TARP!
