Hi there, just wondering if any body else's sales been switched off since giving ebay their national insurance number, I was asked for it on thursday, I obliged as it is the new government law and I've had no sales since, no other information relating to it has been sent to me, the previous year they had my tax return to prove who I was and that I was paying tax, so what now, have I been suspended until they check it, and I don't know about it or is it just a coincidence, because I'm stumped, thanks.

On eBay, you can provide your NI number in advance. This means you can continue selling without any disruption or blockage. If you reach the reporting limit, we'll contact you with your sales report in January of the following year.

It shouldn't affect your sales

Hi there, thanks for replying, I know it shouldn't but unfortunately it seems to have, just odd timing coincidence is all.

It seems more than coincidence, sales have plummeted since providing the NI details last week........

Hi, I was asked for mine a couple of weeks ago. I just did it. I have noticed no change in sales or anything else since.

Sales have just been awful in general for everyone reading the boards so I expect it's a mix of that & BPF creating a coincidence for you

It's not NIN, it's ebay deserted by buyers, they made so many bad changes in the last couple of years, but the most recent ones killed the platform. All that promoted listing obsession/madness and EDD's fiasco, search clogged with sponsored irrelevant results, more recently app working only on some phones and most importantly BPF, not to mention never ending glitches and many other problems...

What always puts me off buying on eBay is when you search for something by price and the price is under £2 but thats just for one.

Also American and Chinese sellers in the search engine on eBay. Above the British sellers.

I gave Ebay my NINO on Thursday evening and since then i had 2 sales Friday and 1 on Sunday and nothing since its really odd. Ive checked listings and traffic and all seems ok there. Not sure if it is to do with the NINO, more likely people are spending money elsewhere and also being more selective on what they buy. I also think the buyers fee may have put a lot of people off of Ebay in general.

Not sure if there's a link, I've had no sales since submitting my NI on Thursday, but they've absolutely tanked over the last month anyway. The Buyer Protection has definitely had a massive impact on visitor numbers, but the final straw is them removing sales history from listing pages (just noticed it this weekend). Having a strong history visible to customers without doubt helped them make an informed choice on which sellers were reliable and established. Now that's gone customers have nothing to go on when assessing trust and reliability of a listing. It's up there with the worst decision Ebay have made (among the many dozens of late) and the last straw for my sales. I don't see this site continuing for much longer.

I had a call with customer services on Friday for a different reason, but I mentioned the sudden drop in sales and this thread (I've recently given my NI number). I know CS tell you what you want to hear but the guy said he couldn't see that they'd be any link between the two (and he genuinely seemed helpful).
I think the algorithm is all over the place for some reason at the moment, I ran a 3 day 20% off flash sale, apart from the first day sales were still dire, it ended last night and today I've had more turnover than when the sale was running!

If you're selling your own possessions this isn't trading or taxable. It only becomes taxable if you buy or make items with the sole intention of selling them on (for profit or loss), in which case you'd need to fill out self assessment tax form for HMRC.
It won't have any effect on your ILR, don't worry about that.

As already said you have nothing to worry about, based on what your selling now.

I don't think there's a link. I had to supply my NI number on two selling accounts last week. One of the accounts immediately sprang into life and had a cracking week. The other went dead.
Just coincidence, I think.

If, you're genuine and honest HMRC will not be a problem, they're coming after the businesses flying under the radar, not people clearing wardrobes

Unlikely, while one of my old bosses got a VAT inspection, (which is brutal) they'll have a clear indication on whether you're worth chasing or not,
3 items a week on average is not something they'd worry about chasing
