I can't believe that eBay feels justified in gouging a charge for a promoted listing when there is only one bid. They might as well say "sorry, idiots, our search engine does not work, so cough up".

Similar when they recommend 20% PL when I am the only seller of a product.
Hence me now reducing by natural wastage not having my few listings left on auto 30 days renew,
and concentrating on you-tube / website and public open days.
I do pay for sponsored ads on the website. But that has a lot more specialist sellers
in my niche.

Obviously, eBay will claim that their "promoted listing" is what found that bidder, and that is true, as you wouldn't have made the sale if the buyer hadn't clicked on a promoted ad.
If the buyer had found your listing independently, you wouldn't have been charged the PL fee.

How do you know this? I mean, no one is looking for a Victorian majolica pottery jug?

One of my other buyers said they found my item by searching on the one keyword they always search on so although I had paid for promotion they would have seen the item anyway and Promotion did not find another bidder.

I sold an item to a buyer on the 28th April and he has since placed 18 more orders that all have the promoted listing fee applied. It’s only 2%, maybe I’m being ungrateful but at what stage do eBay take their mitts off and let the items sell organically again with no PL fee!? It seems like I’ll be paying PL on his purchases in perpetuity now, it isn’t the only one I have another buyer bought 3 things over 3 days all charged the PL. Seems a bit wrong tbh.

I was charged £21 for "promotion" ha-ha for an item that sold to the only bidder for £140. He told me he only searches on one keyword and just scrolls down the list until something pops out so it wasn't "promoted" to him. It would have been different if someone else had been found to bid against him. Then, the fee might have been worth it.
By the way, the buyer had a list of people wanting to view the watercolour by appointment so it is not as if it was of no interest.

Public authorities let Big Tech get away with things. Our useless MPs are all in awe of Big Tech which is forever hosting amazing presentations and sponsoring events in London and the MPs are only too grateful for the canapés and refreshments. Big Tech goes weeping to the MPs about how difficult it is to change the algorithms and the MPs go "there, there, just do what you can. We know how important money is to you. We do understand".
